Novo Nordisk: Rolling a Snowball in a Blizzard

Main text: 2,678 characters, 1 image Estimated reading time: 7 minutes Novo Nordisk is weathering a severe market storm. Following its announcement of a downward revision to its full-year 2025 financial guidance, the company’s stock plunged over 20%, wiping out more than $60 billion in market capitalization. Zooming out, Novo Nordisk’s market value has shrunk by nearly $400 billion over the past year. Investor sentiment has shifted sharply, and narratives suggesting that the company’s first-mover advantage with semaglutide has evaporated are now circulating widely. Yet do such sharp stock fluctuations and investor sentiment truly reflect the actual market performance of its products? Market expectations are often swayed by short-term emotions—so is this correction merely an overreaction driven by panic selling, or does it signal a fundamental challenge to the company’s core value? At this juncture, returning to fundamentals to assess its true condition is especially critical. A Mixed Bag in Financial Results On August 6, Novo Nordisk released its 2025 semi-annual report. The data shows that the company’s total revenue for the first half of the year reached DKK 154.94 billion, representing an 18% increase year-on-year (calculated at constant exchange rates, CER; same below); operating profit amounted to DKK 72.2 billion, up 29% year-on-year. By business segment: • Revenue from Diabetes and Obesity Care stood at DKK 145.41 billion, up 18% year-on-year; • Revenue from Rare Diseases totaled DKK 9.54 billion, up 15% year-on-year. The core driver—the semaglutide portfolio (Ozempic®, Rybelsus®, Wegovy®)—continued to perform strongly: total sales for the first half reached DKK 112.76 billion (converted at the average Jan–Jul 2025 exchange rate of DKK 1 = USD 0.1482, approx. USD 16.71 billion), accounting for approximately 72.77% of Novo Nordisk’s total revenue. Specifically: ● Ozempic® (injectable version for diabetes) generated DKK 64.52 billion in sales, up 15% year-on-year; ● Rybelsus® (oral version for diabetes) achieved DKK 11.35 billion in sales, up 5% year-on-year; ● Wegovy® (injectable version for weight management) posted DKK 36.89 billion in sales, up 78% year-on-year. Collectively, these products’ sales have already surpassed both Keytruda (pembrolizumab)—USD 15.16 billion—and the tirzepatide portfolio (Mounjaro + Zepbound)—USD 14.73 billion—for the same period, effectively securing the title of “world’s top-selling drug” for 2025. Despite these robust figures, market reaction remained tepid. Investors appeared unmoved—not only by the double-digit revenue growth demonstrating operational resilience, nor by the “blockbuster drug” distinction—but rather fixated on Novo Nordisk’s downward revision of its full-year sales guidance, from 13%–21% to 8%–14%, which directly triggered the stock volatility. Novo Nordisk explained that the revised guidance reflects lowered growth expectations for Wegovy® and Ozempic® in the U.S. market. This downward adjustment stems primarily from two factors: chaotic competition from unauthorized generic versions and mounting pressure from rival products. How is Novo Nordisk responding to the generic乱象? First, it is urging federal and state regulatory authorities to strengthen enforcement; second, in March 2025, it launched NovoCare® Pharmacy—an online pharmacy platform—leveraging cash-payment channels, telemedicine partnerships, and direct-to-patient distribution to curb the market penetration of illicit generics.

Data Company Leader and Tech Rising Star: Palantir

You may not have heard of this data company—but you’ve almost certainly heard of two famous military operations it helped enable: First, by analyzing massive volumes of data and intelligence, it assisted the U.S. military in successfully locating and eliminating Osama bin Laden. Second, during the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ukrainian forces employed the company’s data analytics software in Operation ‘Spider Web,’ enabling drones to conduct long-range strikes that destroyed multiple Russian strategic bombers. Since early 2023, its stock price has surged 15-fold, pushing its market capitalization above $370 billion. In 2023, its share price rose 179.77%; in 2024, it soared 361.13%; and as of mid-2025, it continues its strong momentum—with year-to-date gains exceeding 80%. In capital markets, it’s viewed as a ‘national destiny stock’ of the United States—surpassing legacy SaaS giant Salesforce to rank among the top ten most valuable tech stocks in the U.S., standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Microsoft, Apple, NVIDIA, and Tesla. Which tech company is so formidable that it dares to challenge Cambricon in the stock market? It’s Palantir—the U.S.-based data company! Unveiling Palantir The name ‘Palantir’ originates from J.R.R. Tolkien’s *The Lord of the Rings*, where a ‘palantír’ is a mystical seeing-stone capable of revealing ultimate truths. This naming aptly captures the company’s mission: using data analytics to uncover truth—letting data speak. Founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel, Stephen Cohen, Alex Karp, and Joe Lonsdale, Palantir is a U.S. software company specializing in big-data analytics, headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Its founders are all exceptional individuals—especially Peter Thiel, better known in the IT industry as co-founder of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook, often dubbed the ‘Godfather of Silicon Valley.’ Current CEO Alex Karp holds a Ph.D. in philosophy and is known for his provocative, even combative, public commentary. Why is Palantir so powerful? Because it handles both data management and advanced analytics end-to-end: integrating fragmented data scattered across disparate internal systems into a unified data platform, building analytical models, and delivering actionable, business-relevant insights. Sounds familiar? Don’t many data-software firms offer similar capabilities? No. Palantir’s technical barriers are exceptionally high—it excels at solving several notoriously difficult challenges in the data domain: data security, privacy protection, real-time processing, and context-specific application. Its customer satisfaction is extremely high—a point we’ll substantiate later with commercial data. Palantir’s business model differs from typical data-software companies. We know that most IT firms fall into one of two categories: IT services (consulting, outsourcing) or software product vendors—very few can deliver end-to-end solutions. Starting from users’ core business pain points, Palantir designs holistic solutions, implements them using its proprietary software, and ultimately delivers tangible business value. For any IT company, managing and executing such an integrated approach poses a significant operational challenge.
