Researchers employ various modeling approaches—including equivalent circuit models, physics-based models, and data-driven models—to analyze and predict battery degradation mechanisms. The accuracy of lifetime prediction models is critical for optimizing battery management systems (BMS) and ensuring reliable battery operation. Through big data analytics and machine learning algorithms, researchers can extract valuable insights from vast volumes of battery usage data, thereby enhancing the precision and reliability of lifetime prediction models. 1.3 Mainstream Power Battery Products 1.3.1 Tesla’s Battery Technology Tesla has developed proprietary battery technology; its latest 4680 battery delivers significant improvements in energy density and manufacturing efficiency. Widely deployed in Tesla’s electric vehicles, this battery enables longer driving ranges and superior performance. Additionally, it employs dry electrode technology, minimizing solvent use and energy consumption during production—thereby lowering manufacturing costs. Through vertical integration of its battery supply chain, Tesla achieves efficient production management and cost control. 1.3.2 Panasonic and LG Chem Battery Products Panasonic and LG Chem are globally leading battery manufacturers, with products widely used in electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics: ● Panasonic: Supplies high-energy-density, long-life lithium-ion batteries. Renowned for stable performance and high reliability, Panasonic batteries are extensively used in Tesla’s EVs. By continuously optimizing battery materials and manufacturing processes, Panasonic has enhanced energy density and charge/discharge efficiency. Moreover, Panasonic is actively investing in solid-state battery development to pioneer next-generation high-performance batteries. ● LG Chem: Possesses extensive expertise in high-performance batteries and novel material applications. LG Chem’s battery portfolio spans small consumer electronics to large-scale EVs; its high-nickel ternary batteries excel in both energy density and cycle life. Through collaborations with numerous global automakers, LG Chem has accelerated the widespread adoption and technological advancement of EV batteries. 1.3.3 Innovative Products from Emerging Companies Several emerging companies have also achieved notable progress in the power battery field—such as Solid Power and QuantumScape—which focus on solid-state battery technologies aimed at developing batteries with higher energy density and improved safety. ● Solid Power: A company dedicated to developing all-solid-state battery technology. Its products feature high energy density and exceptional safety performance, positioning them as a key direction for next-generation power batteries. Leveraging advanced materials R&D and manufacturing processes, Solid Power has successfully fabricated multiple solid-state battery prototypes and partnered with several automakers to advance commercialization. ● QuantumScape: Specializes in high-performance solid-state batteries, whose products deliver both high energy density and extended lifespan.

LG Energy Solution (LGES), a subsidiary of South Korea’s LG Group, traces its origins back to 1947, when LG Group’s predecessor—Lucky Chemical Industrial Society—was founded. In 1992, LG pioneered lithium-ion battery R&D in South Korea, marking a pivotal milestone in the nation’s battery industry development. In December 2020, LG Chem spun off its battery business into an independent entity named LG Energy Solution. On January 27, 2022, LG Energy Solution officially commenced trading on the Korea Exchange. To date, LGES operates across three core domains—power batteries, small-format batteries, and energy storage systems—and employs over 34,000 people globally, holding more than 25,000 patents—the highest number worldwide. As of now, LGES maintains production bases in China, South Korea, the United States, Europe, and Indonesia. According to the ‘2024 Global New Energy 500,’ China’s CATL (“Ning Wang”) ranks first, China Power Construction Corporation second, and LG Energy Solution third. Specifically in the power battery segment, as of 2023, CATL leads the global market with a 36.8% share; BYD follows closely with 15.8%; and LG Energy Solution holds third place with a 13.6% market share. In the Chinese market, data shows that in 2023, China’s power battery installation volume reached 387.7 GWh—a 31.6% year-on-year increase—and accounted for 55% of the global total. CATL and BYD dominate with the largest market shares, while LG Energy Solution stands as the sole foreign enterprise among the top ten. LG Energy Solution in China: Three Factories—All Located in Nanjing LG Group began its presence in Nanjing, China, in 1995. To date, LG Group has invested over USD 8 billion cumulatively in Nanjing’s Jiangning Economic and Technological Development Zone, establishing 10 enterprises and employing nearly 30,000 people. In the battery sector, LG Energy Solution operates three factories in China—all located in Nanjing: AECI New Energy (Nanjing) Co., Ltd.; AECI New Energy Battery (Nanjing) Co., Ltd.; and AECI New Energy Technology (Nanjing) Co., Ltd. China has thus become one of LG Energy Solution’s most strategically important markets. In 2003—when LG Energy Solution was still part of LG Chem—LG established its first factory in Nanjing’s Economic and Technological Development Zone: LG Chem (Nanjing) Information Electronics Materials Co., Ltd. (later renamed AECI New Energy [Nanjing] Co., Ltd.), initially producing optical films—polarizers—for display panels. Starting in 2014, LG Chem gradually shifted toward automotive power battery development. That same year, LG Chem formed a joint venture with Chinese partners—Nanjing LG Chem New Energy Battery Co., Ltd.—and held the groundbreaking ceremony for the project in Nanjing’s Development Zone in October. In August 2018, LG Energy Solution established another facility in Nanjing’s Jiangning Binjiang Development Zone, with a total investment of USD 3.3 billion, focusing on the production and sale of new energy vehicle power batteries and energy storage batteries—primarily supplying Volkswagen. In 2023, LG Energy Solution signed a new project agreement with Jiangning Binjiang Development Zone, primarily to produce dedicated power batteries for General Motors.
