Marvell's Q2 net profit surges 154% year-on-year

Management indicated that Q3 data center revenue is expected to rise over 20% quarter-on-quarter and surge 75% year-on-year. The company has raised its long-term revenue outlook for the second consecutive quarter: full-year fiscal 2027 revenue guidance was increased from $11.5 billion to $12.0 billion—a 45% year-on-year increase. Fiscal 2028 revenue guidance was raised directly from $16.5 billion to $18.0 billion, implying an anticipated ~50% annual growth rate, with data center operations remaining the main growth engine—targeting over 60% annual revenue growth for the segment.

Pharmaron’s Q2 performance shows sequential improvement, supported by platformization and new capacity

Pharmaron Holdings (01521.HK)—a rare CRO with integrated operations across both North America and China—recently released its 2023 interim financial results. In the first half of 2023, the company generated approximately $128 million in revenue, $38.99 million in gross profit, and $4.6 million in net profit; adjusted net profit totaled about $10.2 million. While revenue growth slowed, gross profit and net profit declined—suggesting minor fluctuations across revenue, cost, and expense lines during the period. Q2 Shows Clear Sequential Improvement Pharmaron’s controlling shareholder is A-share-listed Tigermed. Earlier, Pharmaron had issued a Q1 performance summary: Q1 revenue was approximately $59 million, down 1.8% year-on-year, and the company unexpectedly posted a $0.9 million net loss. Key reasons cited included pandemic-related impacts—employee infection rates surged significantly in Q1, delaying numerous projects—as well as costs associated with newly commissioned domestic facilities, including labor, depreciation, and amortization. To expand service capabilities, Pharmaron has invested in new capacity facilities in both North America and China in recent years. Capital expenditures totaled approximately $50.6 million in 2021 and $48 million in 2022—up sharply from just $15.1 million in 2020. Two consecutive years of heavy investment have gradually brought new capacity online—but also ushered in a ‘ramp-up’ phase, which inherently pressures profitability. Compounded with Q1’s pandemic impact, this led to a single-quarter loss. In the H1 results, this manifested as cost growth outpacing revenue growth, alongside expanded R&D and finance expenses. Looking solely at Q2, however, clear sequential improvement emerged: Q2 revenue reached approximately $69.4 million, up 17.6% quarter-on-quarter; North American business revenue rose 11.9% quarter-on-quarter, while Chinese business revenue grew 43.9% quarter-on-quarter (in RMB terms); net profit reached approximately $5.5 million—returning to profitability. Despite headwinds from capacity ramp-up and some pricing competition, Pharmaron’s Q2 performance improved markedly on a sequential basis—indicating a clear trend toward operational recovery. As new capacity scales and achieves economies of scale, associated costs and expenses will gradually be absorbed, supporting stronger future operating results. Platformized Service Capabilities + New Capacity Deployment Fuel Better Growth Over the past year, the broader CRO sector has faced multiple headwinds. Amid subdued global financing conditions and biopharma companies’ intensified cost-control and efficiency initiatives, market concerns have mounted regarding the sustainability of CROs’ high growth. While industry-wide factors are beyond any single company’s control—and the sector has already undergone substantial correction, awaiting clear turnaround signals—the most reliable way for any firm to navigate cycles remains strengthening its internal capabilities. In recent years, Pharmaron has persistently built integrated service capabilities and established three core platforms: drug discovery, drug development, and clinical services—enabling comprehensive, end-to-end solutions spanning the entire discovery and development continuum. Developing integrated service capabilities reflects not only technical strength but also positions Pharmaron to win larger, more complex projects and meet increasingly diverse and sophisticated client needs.
