A new technology that eliminates 30% of carbon emissions

In 2004, Casseris first came to MIT to pursue a graduate degree in mechanical engineering. At the time, he worked at the Sloan Automotive Laboratory, where he authored a report on the future of transportation. During his doctoral studies, he developed a novel technology to improve the fuel efficiency of internal combustion engines for an alliance of automotive and energy companies—and subsequently joined that alliance after graduation. Around 2014, Leslie Bromberg approached him. Bromberg, a prolific inventor holding over 100 patents, had served for nearly 50 years as Chief Research Engineer at MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center. “Bromberg had a crazy idea—to convert internal combustion engines into reactors,” Casseris recalled. “I’d studied this while working in industry, and I loved it—but my company felt the concept needed more validation.” Bromberg validated the idea through a U.S. Department of Energy–funded project, using a diesel engine to ‘reform’ methane—a high-pressure chemical reaction in which methane combines with steam and oxygen to produce hydrogen. This work deeply impressed Casseris, who returned to MIT in 2016 as a research scientist. “Alongside several other research projects, we kept pursuing this idea—and eventually decided to license it from MIT and commit fully to its development,” Casseris recalled. “If you’re an MIT inventor, collaborating with MIT’s Technology Licensing Office is exceptionally smooth. You can access low-cost licensing options and conduct extensive R&D under them—something absolutely critical for a startup. Then, once you’re ready, you finalize the license. So MIT played a pivotal role.” At the heart of the Emvolon system lies an off-the-shelf automotive engine operated in a ‘fuel-rich’ mode—i.e., with a fuel-to-air ratio higher than required for complete combustion. “It sounds simple, but it demands substantial intellectual property—and that’s precisely what MIT developed,” Casseris said. “Rather than combusting methane in the gas stream entirely into carbon dioxide and water, we partially combust—or partially oxidize—it into carbon monoxide and hydrogen: the foundational building blocks for synthesizing various chemicals.” Hydrogen and carbon monoxide serve as intermediate products for synthesizing diverse chemical compounds via subsequent reactions. These downstream processing steps occur adjacent to the engine and are powered directly by the engine itself. Each standalone Emvolon system fits inside a 40-foot shipping container and can produce approximately eight tons of methanol per day from 300,000 standard cubic feet of methane gas. The company chose green methanol as its initial product because it serves as an ideal fuel for hard-to-decarbonize sectors such as maritime shipping and heavy-duty transport—and as an excellent feedstock for other high-value chemicals, including sustainable aviation fuel. Many shipping vessels have already transitioned to green methanol to meet decarbonization goals. This summer, the company also received a grant from the Department of Energy to refine its process, incorporating solar and wind power for clean liquid fuel production. “We aim to expand into other chemical products—such as ammonia—and other feedstocks—including biomass and hydrogen produced from renewable electricity. We’ve already achieved encouraging research results in these areas,” Casseris said.

The listing price is RMB 7.625 billion, with a deposit of RMB 762.5 million. The listing period runs from May 26, 2026, to June 23, 2026. Based on the listing price, Huangjueshu Finance estimates the overall valuation of Inner Mongolia Mengneng New Energy Co., Ltd. has reached RMB 30.5 billion. Business registration records show that Inner Mongolia Mengneng New Energy Co., Ltd. was established on November 22, 2010, with registered capital of RMB 13.798 billion. Its sole shareholder is Inner Mongolia Energy Group, holding 100% equity. Reportedly, Inner Mongolia Mengneng New Energy Co., Ltd. serves as the new-energy investment and operations platform under Inner Mongolia Energy Group, focusing on investment and management of renewable-energy projects—including wind and solar power. As of April 2026, Inner Mongolia Energy Group’s operational new-energy installed capacity totaled 28.8555 GW, comprising 17.3948 GW of wind power and 11.4607 GW of photovoltaic power—ranking first among provincial- or regional-level state-owned enterprises nationwide. Inner Mongolia Mengneng New Energy Co., Ltd. boasts outstanding financial performance. Financial data shows that in 2025, the company achieved operating revenue of RMB 4.585 billion and net profit of RMB 2.063 billion. As of the end of December 2025, its total assets stood at RMB 106.168 billion, total liabilities at RMB 85.187 billion, and shareholders’ equity at RMB 20.981 billion. This equity transfer constitutes a core prerequisite step toward the IPO of Inner Mongolia Mengneng New Energy Co., Ltd.
