Fujifilm China’s Resource Recycling Factory Achieves Carbon Neutrality, Fully Powered by Solar and Other Renewable Energy Sources

On July 4, 2022, Mr. Yuichi Goto, Representative Director, President & CEO of Fujifilm Holdings Corporation, announced that Fujifilm Aico Manufacturing (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. had achieved carbon neutrality. Fujifilm Aico Manufacturing (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. is a resource-recycling factory that remanufactures and regenerates used Fujifilm Business Innovation digital multifunction devices and printers. To fully adopt renewable energy, the factory installed approximately 8,000 square meters of solar photovoltaic panels, supplying 90% of its on-site electricity demand; the remaining power is procured from electricity suppliers holding Renewable Energy Certificates*. Fujifilm Aico Manufacturing (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. site Fujifilm’s climate action goals are to achieve net-zero CO₂ emissions from production processes by March 2041 (FY2040), and to reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions—spanning raw material procurement, manufacturing, transportation, product use, and disposal—by 50% compared to FY2019 levels by March 2031 (FY2030).

A New Technology Capable of Eliminating 30% of Carbon Emissions

However, methane—the primary component of natural gas—is also a valuable fuel and a precursor to several important chemicals. The main obstacle to using methane for carbon emission reduction lies in the fact that human-generated methane sources—such as landfills, farms, and oil-and-gas wells—are relatively small and widely dispersed across vast non-urban areas, whereas traditional chemical processing facilities are large-scale and centralized. This makes capturing, transporting, and converting methane gas into any useful substance prohibitively expensive. Consequently, most companies simply flare off methane at its point of generation, treating it as a sunk cost and environmental burden. Emvolon, a spin-off company from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is pioneering a novel approach to methane utilization: retrofitting automotive engines into modular, cost-effective chemical plants. Its system absorbs methane gas onsite and converts it into liquid fuels such as methanol and ammonia—fuels that can either be used directly or shipped in standard shipping containers via truck. “We see this as a new paradigm for chemical manufacturing,” said Dr. Emmanuel Katsiris, co-founder and CEO of Emvolon. “We started with methane because it is an abundant emission stream we can repurpose as a feedstock. With methane, we simultaneously address two major challenges: roughly 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions originate from hard-to-abate sectors—including maritime shipping, aviation, heavy-duty trucking, and rail—that require green fuels; another 15% stems from distributed methane sources like landfills and oil wells.” By leveraging mass-produced automotive engines and avoiding infrastructure investments such as pipelines, the company claims its technology renders methane conversion economically attractive enough for widespread adoption. The system can also utilize intermittent green hydrogen generated from renewable energy sources and convert it into ammonia—a fuel likewise applicable for decarbonizing fertilizer production. “In the future, we’ll need green fuels, because large vessels or aircraft cannot be electrified—we must rely on high-energy-density, low-carbon-footprint, and low-cost liquid fuels,” Katsiris explained. “The energy sources for producing green fuels are either distributed—like methane—or variable—like wind power. Thus, it’s unlikely we’ll rely on massive, fixed-location factories dedicated solely to green fuel production. Whether distributed or variable, both types of green energy are ideally suited to this modular design.” Katsiris first arrived at MIT in 2004 to pursue graduate studies in mechanical engineering, working at the Sloan Automotive Laboratory where he authored a report on the future of transportation. During his doctoral studies, he developed a novel technology to improve internal combustion engine fuel efficiency for an alliance of automotive and energy companies; after graduation, he continued working for that same alliance. Around 2014, Leslie Bromberg approached him. Bromberg, a prolific inventor holding over 100 patents, had served for nearly 50 years as Chief Research Engineer at MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center. “Bromberg had a wild idea—to convert internal combustion engines into chemical reactors,” Katsiris recalled. “I’d researched this while working in industry, and I loved the concept—but my employer at the time felt the technology required further validation.”
