Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—'forever chemicals'—have been detected across multiple regions in Japan; contamination may now be nationwide. What health risks do these chemicals pose, and where might they originate?

More than 54 modified variants—designed to evade regulation—have already emerged: [In fact, North Carolina’s toxic PFSA contamination has been publicly known for years. According to a November 14, 2018, Guardian report, an EPA draft risk assessment stated, 'Animal studies indicate GenX affects the kidneys, liver, and immune system.' GenX is a short-chain fluorinated organic compound developed by DuPont in 2009 to replace perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, also known as C8)—a PFAS compound in the same class but more toxic. At the time, Chemours—a DuPont spin-off—was manufacturing fluoropolymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), firefighting foams, paints, food packaging, outdoor fabrics, and cleaning products using GenX at its Fayetteville, North Carolina plant. A UN official statement from November last year noted that since 2014, the Fayetteville facility has received hazardous PFAS waste generated during GenX production from the Netherlands. In 2019, North Carolina ordered Chemours to control on-site PFAS contamination caused by production or emissions from its Fayetteville plant. According to a report submitted to the EPA in October 2020, 54 known PFAS compounds linked to Chemours were identified locally… At the governmental level, Chemours appears to have pursued minimal-cost solutions. In 2018, the company paid a $13 million fine—publicized as the largest environmental penalty in North Carolina history—yet this sum amounted to only about 1% of Chemours’ annual profits that year. Additionally, in 2019 Chemours reached a settlement with North Carolina agreeing to assist public water utilities in reducing PFAS levels in rivers, provide drinking-water treatment solutions for public buildings, and implement other cleanup measures. By June 2023, Chemours, DuPont de Nemours, and Corteva had agreed to an $1.19 billion settlement with most U.S. public water systems over PFAS contamination. Yet experts contend that DuPont and Chemours still have not taken serious steps to prevent PFAS pollution or protect local residents from PFAS exposure. As of February 2023, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority was the only public water utility in North Carolina equipped with granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration systems specifically designed to remove PFAS.
