That said, if your sole focus is landing a role at top-tier tech giants (FAANG), the DB offers limited utility—since very few such companies post openings there. For example, Google and Microsoft still require referrals from insiders. Next, let me share common pathways for securing a co-op position. Before beginning your search, you must first enroll in and complete a co-op seminar course. Upon completion, you’ll be assigned a co-op advisor who will assist you with all co-op-related preparations. The first and most accessible route is using NEU’s official co-op system—a highly efficient and widely used method. To gain access, you must both complete the co-op seminar and fulfill all eligibility requirements, then schedule a meeting with your co-op advisor. Only after this meeting will you receive login credentials for the co-op system. Once granted access, you’ll need to upload required application materials—including your resume, transcripts, and cover letter—into the system. The NEU co-op system hosts abundant resources: numerous Boston-area employers, plus a smaller number of companies based in California. Most importantly, the application process is extremely convenient—once you identify suitable positions, you can submit your application with just one click, and the system automatically forwards your pre-uploaded documents directly to the employer, saving considerable time. Crucially, if a company posts a co-op opening through NEU’s internal co-op system, it strongly signals their intent to hire NEU students. Consequently, your chances of receiving interviews and offers increase significantly. Such employers typically aim to convert co-op students into full-time hires, making return offers comparatively common.

It’s difficult to declare any single method universally superior. In such a scenario, no investor would willingly sell below the 'fair' valuation, nor buy above it—resulting in negligible trading volume and minimal price volatility. Clearly, that’s not how real markets behave. Thus, arriving at a 'reasonable' valuation for a listed company is inherently challenging. A widely adopted practical approach is comparative analysis—benchmarking against peers operating in the same sector. Key dimensions for comparison include core business operations, financial metrics, company scale, management team quality, and shareholder background. Moreover, Guo Erxia believes that for IPO subscription (‘new stock subscription’), market sentiment—not fundamental valuation—is often the dominant driver behind initial pricing. Broad market conditions, in fact, may matter more than company-specific valuation—evidenced by numerous cases where new listings peak on their debut day, only to decline steadily thereafter. For long-term institutional investors, however, valuation remains indispensable when evaluating a company. So how should different types of companies be valued? 1. Price-to-Earnings (P/E) Valuation The P/E ratio measures the ratio of a listed company’s current stock price per share to its earnings per share (EPS). Its formula is: P/E Ratio = Stock Price per Share / Earnings per Share, or equivalently, Market Capitalization / Net Income Attributable to Shareholders. As a mature and widely accepted valuation method, P/E is remarkably simple and effective. Put simply, assuming a company’s EPS remains constant over the coming years, the P/E multiple indicates how many years it would take for shareholders (i.e., stock investors) to recoup their initial investment. Conceptually, the P/E ratio resembles the ‘payback period’ used in real-economy investments—though it ignores the time value of money. Importantly, the P/E ratio reflects only a company’s current operational performance—it lacks forward-looking insight. This limitation gives rise to the ‘Forward P/E’ (or ‘Dynamic P/E’) valuation method. For instance, before the fiscal year 2021 concludes, analysts may estimate a company’s full-year net profit based on its published interim (e.g., six-month) financial results, then compute a Forward P/E ratio to assess whether the stock is overvalued or undervalued. Also note: cyclical resource stocks—which have recently surged—often defy P/E-based valuation. At cyclical peaks, their P/E ratios tend to hit historic lows—even as their stock prices reach record highs. 2.
