After discovering commercially viable oil fields through exploration, the industry enters the development and production phase. Oil extraction typically proceeds through three stages—primary, secondary, and tertiary recovery—and is broadly categorized into four major technological families: chemical flooding, gas injection, thermal recovery, and microbial enhanced oil recovery. The downstream segment of the petroleum industry chain includes refining and petrochemicals. Petroleum refining converts crude oil into fuels such as diesel, kerosene, and gasoline, as well as lubricants, asphalt, and petroleum coke as by-products. Refining comprises two main processes: primary processing—direct distillation of crude oil to yield fractions—and secondary processing—further treatment of those fractions. Petrochemicals involve chemical processing of feedstocks derived from refining (or directly from refined crude) to produce basic chemical building blocks—including ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, and xylene—which are then used to synthesize a wide range of organic chemicals and synthetic materials. For example: 1) Exploration: As shallow resources become depleted, oil companies shift toward deeper or offshore exploration, demanding advanced technologies and higher capital investment—for instance, deepwater drilling platforms and related expertise. Complex geological conditions—such as mountainous terrain or seismically active zones—further complicate exploration due to intricate subsurface structures. 2) Production: To extract more oil from mature fields, advanced enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques—e.g., water flooding, gas injection, and chemical flooding—are required. Developing unconventional resources like shale oil and tight sandstone gas necessitates specialized hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technologies to overcome low permeability. 3) Crude oil handling: Crude oil and natural gas extracted from wells contain substantial water content, requiring dehydration via sedimentation, thermal-chemical methods, or electrostatic separation—to protect transportation pipelines and ensure product quality. Additionally, impurities and harmful elements must be carefully managed. From a business perspective, ExxonMobil’s upstream adjusted profit reached $9.2 billion, while its refining profit hit $4.1 billion—both up sequentially from Q1, yet still below market expectations. Biraj Borkhataria, analyst at RBC Capital Markets, noted that ongoing Middle East conflict continues to affect certain operations, particularly ExxonMobil’s extensive assets in Qatar, where limited liquefied natural gas (LNG) export routes may persistently dampen investor sentiment.
