Why was the lower half of indoor white walls traditionally painted green?

In fact, this type of wall—white on top and green on the bottom—has a specific, standardized name: the 'hygienic wall.' This term refers to an interior decorative technique where the lower portion of an indoor wall is painted with a darker-colored paint, creating a sharp visual contrast with the upper, white-painted section. Having clarified this concept, let’s explore how this 'white-on-top, green-on-bottom' hygienic wall came into being. Its emergence stems primarily from three factors: First, its exceptional cost-effectiveness enabled rapid nationwide adoption. During that era—marked by relative material scarcity—only a handful of households could afford to paint their entire walls. Painting only the lower portion thus became the most cost-efficient interior finishing solution widely embraced by the public. The technique was simple, easy to execute, and ensured uniform, standardized results without variation—perfectly aligning with the collectivist and uniformity-emphasizing ethos of the time. Consequently, it spread quickly across all kinds of buildings. Moreover, limiting paint application to just the lower wall section dramatically reduced paint consumption and lowered overall costs—achieving both economy and practicality in perfect harmony with the prevailing social conditions and needs. Second, the hygienic wall was explicitly designed for hygiene. At the time, interior walls in both urban and rural Chinese buildings were predominantly lime-based—made by thoroughly mixing slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) with water and applying it evenly onto walls; once dried, they formed plain white surfaces. Though seemingly simple to apply, lime walls had serious drawbacks: rough, uneven surfaces with protrusions; over time, they easily shed powder and flaked off; stains were difficult to clean; and during rainy weather, they became damp and prone to mold. To address these shortcomings—and simultaneously enhance wall durability and functionality—people began applying paint to wall surfaces. For walls, the zone within 1–1.5 meters above floor level is most vulnerable to daily wear and contamination: bumps from tables and chairs, scrapes from stools, children’s kicks or graffiti, etc. Painting this lower section created a dense protective layer, effectively preventing scuffs, footprints, and stains. Even if soiled, the surface could be effortlessly restored with a damp cloth—eliminating the need for repainting. This greatly simplified routine cleaning and maintenance, slashing both effort and cost. People could walk or even run right up against the wall without getting covered in white dust—practicality soared. Born amid the nationwide Patriotic Health Campaign, the hygienic wall perfectly embodied the societal consensus of 'addressing prominent health issues in people’s daily lives and production,' becoming a popular social trend. A room featuring a hygienic wall was far more 'hygienic' than one with bare lime walls. Finally, contemporary aesthetic preferences played an indispensable role. In the 1970s and 1980s, as living standards improved, people’s spiritual and cultural needs grew steadily. Greater attention was paid to comfort and aesthetics within residential spaces. Homes were no longer mere assemblies of materials or plots of land—they carried heightened expectations and aspirations.
