In October 2026, the industry-renowned media outlet TuJie (Coating World) released the '2026 Top 30 Automotive Coatings Brands in China' ranking. Total automotive coatings sales revenue of the ranked brands amounted to RMB 30.4693 billion, up 3.83% year-on-year; collectively accounting for 62.95% of China’s total automotive coatings market share—a decrease of 4.36 percentage points year-on-year. Among them, domestic brands occupied 17 spots, with cumulative sales revenue of RMB 10.2343 billion, representing 33.59% of the ranking’s total revenue; foreign brands occupied 13 spots, with cumulative sales revenue of RMB 20.235 billion, representing 66.41% of the ranking’s total revenue. The top ten brands’ combined sales revenue totaled RMB 23.7776 billion, up 2.51% year-on-year, accounting for 78.04% of the ranking’s total sales revenue. Foreign and domestic brands were evenly matched in terms of representation. In terms of sub-segments, foreign brands dominate passenger vehicle OEM coatings, premium refinish coatings, and battery cell coatings, while domestic brands are rapidly gaining ground in commercial vehicle coatings, automotive refinish coatings, and component coatings. Among them, Yatu High-Tech is China’s largest domestic automotive refinish coatings brand; Jinlitai is China’s largest commercial vehicle coatings manufacturer; and Xiangjiang Paint Group ranks second on both the '2026 Top 10 Chinese Automotive OEM Coatings Brands' and the '2026 Top 10 Chinese Passenger Vehicle OEM Coatings Brands' lists—the highest-ranking domestic coatings brand. Axalta ranked third. Axalta is a global leader in high-performance and automotive coatings. Its origins trace back to Herbert & Co., founded in Germany in 1866. In the late 1990s, DuPont acquired Herbert and integrated it with its own automotive coatings business to form DuPont Performance Coatings (DPC). In February 2013, Carlyle Group completed its acquisition of DPC and rebranded it as Axalta Coating Systems, headquartered in Philadelphia, USA. On November 18, 2025, Axalta announced a merger agreement with Dutch coatings giant AkzoNobel, with completion scheduled for 2027. Axalta entered the Chinese market in 1984 and operates four wholly-owned manufacturing facilities—in Changchun (Jilin), Jiading and Qingpu (Shanghai), and Ma’anshan (Anhui)—as well as one Asia-Pacific R&D Center, one Global Color Development Center, and four customer training centers. Its product portfolio covers automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinish coatings, powder coatings, and insulating coatings. Key customers include FAW Group, FAW Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Chery, General Motors, and Sinotruk Group. Last December, Axalta Coating Systems Shanghai Co., Ltd. completed acceptance of its Phase V technical renovation project. The project had a total investment of RMB 30 million and added annual production capacity of 23,000 tons of automotive coatings—including 5,600 tons/year of clear coat, 2,400 tons/year of hardener, 2,200 tons/year of waterborne refinish coatings, and 12,800 tons/year of waterborne topcoats.
