When the wind rises and clouds soar—among U.S. lithium resource companies, which one stands out? An in-depth analysis of Albemarle (ALB).

Salt lake lithium resources are primarily concentrated in the 'Lithium Triangle' of South America, western United States, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau salt lake region of China—with the Atacama Salt Flat, jointly developed by SQM and Albemarle (ALB), being the most renowned (note: SQM and ALB hold only extraction rights to the Atacama Salt Flat). We are bullish on the resource endowments of ALB and SQM. From the perspective of salt lake resource distribution and supply, SQM and ALB are evenly matched; next come Livent (spun off from FMC) and Orocobre. Domestic Chinese brine-based lithium producers remain far from competitive with these international giants in terms of supply capacity. What about lithium compound production volume? As shown in 2020 data, U.S.-based Albemarle Corporation (ALB) still held the world’s largest market share, followed by China’s Ganfeng Lithium in second place. SQM—23.77% owned by Tianqi Lithium—ranked third, while Tianqi Lithium itself ranked fourth, and Livent fifth. From a mining cost standpoint, cost control is one of the core elements of integrated competitiveness for lithium chemical enterprises—and also serves as a performance indicator reflecting internal management systems and operational effectiveness. A lithium mining company’s profitability hinges largely on its cost-control capability, with mining costs constituting a major portion thereof. As illustrated above, the lowest global lithium mining costs currently belong to FMC’s LTHM, U.S. Albemarle (ALB), and Orocobre. Accordingly, this analysis focuses on the three companies with the strongest resource endowments: ALB, SQM, and Livent—while analyses of SQM and Livent will appear in subsequent articles. Our focus here is on lithium-related operations: lithium accounted for 37% of total revenue, with the company projecting industry growth at approximately 20% annually.

Our Overweight Investment Highlights Highlight #1: Robust Capacity Expansion Albemarle is one of the world’s largest lithium producers. In 2022, Albemarle accounted for 23% of global lithium output, with upstream production totaling approximately 180,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). Albemarle is actively executing both short- and long-term growth plans, aiming to increase its refining capacity from 200,000 tons/year in 2022 to 450,000–500,000 tons/year by 2030. Based on all publicly announced projects—including La Negra Phases III & IV, Kemerton Phases I–IV, Qinzhou, Meishan, and the large-scale Richburg facility in the U.S.—we project that Albemarle’s refining capacity will expand by approximately 355,000 tons/year by fiscal year 2027 (from ~150,000 tons/year in FY2022). We forecast a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of ~15% in LCE capacity from 2023 to 2027; however, given its planned conversion facilities in Zhangjiagang, other Asia-Pacific locations, and Europe, we believe Albemarle has the potential to reach 500,000 tons/year of capacity as early as 2023. Assuming each project requires two years to reach full capacity—for example, Kemerton Phases III & IV and the Richburg Mega Flex—we estimate Albemarle’s LCE production CAGR at ~18% from 2023 to 2027, inclusive of additional processing volumes. The company holds seven upstream resources and operates eight production facilities globally. Upstream, Albemarle has expansion plans at Greenbushes, Wodgina, and Silver Peak—and is evaluating restarting operations at Kings Mountain in the U.S. and potentially at Antofalla. Albemarle holds a 49% stake in Greenbushes through its joint venture Talison Lithium with Tianqi Lithium. Tianqi Lithium is rated Overweight by HTI (“Tianqi Lithium owns a 26% stake, boasts globally diversified high-quality lithium assets, and steadily expands its resource base”), while IGO Limited holds the remaining 25% (HTI does not cover IGO). Currently, Greenbushes’ spodumene processing capacity stands at 1.62 million tons/year (24,000 tons/year LCE); the company aims to raise output to 2.1 million tons/year (32,000 tons/year LCE) by 2025, and further to 395,000 tons/year LCE by 2027 via two additional processing plants. Chemically refined spodumene concentrate will be shipped to Albemarle’s Meishan and Xinyu facilities in China or to Kemerton in Australia for further refining into battery-grade lithium hydroxide. The Wodgina mine resumed operations in Q2 2022, after having been suspended since its acquisition in 2019. Production was paused pending stronger market demand; the project now comprises three phases, with a total capacity of 750,000 tons/year (110,000 tons/year LCE).
