As of October 20, 22 A-share-listed chemical companies had disclosed their Q1–Q3 financial results or earnings forecasts—only two projected declines, while the majority forecast net profit growth exceeding 50%. Among those that have released full Q3 reports, multiple firms reported positive net profit growth. From coal chemical to refining and petrochemicals, from organosilicon to fluorine chemicals, the list of upbeat performers spans virtually the entire industrial chain. For the past two years, ‘production cuts,’ ‘capacity rationalization,’ and ‘enduring losses’ have defined the chemical industry—losses were practically the norm. Suddenly, the entire sector seems to have flipped its script overnight. Yet outsized profits are never accidental. Dissecting this set of results reveals a single key: spread—the price differential between feedstocks and finished products. Understanding how this spread has rewidened explains not only the origin of this upturn but also helps assess how long it may last. Behind the list of positive forecasts lie three distinct profit-generating models: First, private-sector mega-refiners are spearheading this recovery. Hengli Petrochemical forecasts Q1–Q3 net profit of RMB 10.256 billion, up ~104.20% year-on-year; Rongsheng Petrochemical forecasts RMB 7.8–8.2 billion, up 777.93%–822.95%; and Hengyi Petrochemical forecasts RMB 7.9–8.1 billion, up a staggering 3,318.59%–3,405.13%. This more-than-thirty-fold growth has historical context: Hengyi’s full-year net profits in 2023, 2024, and 2025 were just RMB 435 million, RMB 234 million, and RMB 258 million, respectively—meaning its Q1–Q3 2026 profit alone already exceeds several years’ worth of cumulative earnings. Why refiners? The answer lies overseas. According to the International Energy Agency, reduced refinery output in certain regions has created a pronounced global diesel supply shortfall, pushing diesel refining margins to a peak of USD 95 per barrel. Chronic tightness in Southeast Asia’s refined product supply-demand balance has allowed firms with overseas refineries to consistently capture locational advantages. Rongsheng Petrochemical stated directly in its announcement: ‘Overseas refined product markets are robust, and processing spreads for key products have significantly recovered.’ Hengyi’s Brunei refinery exemplifies this trend—contributing approximately RMB 4.565 billion in profit in H1 2026 (calculated at its 70% equity stake), accounting for roughly 77% of its consolidated net profit. Its Phase II 12-million-ton-per-year refining and petrochemical complex is now under construction, scheduled for completion by end-2028. Second, coal chemical enterprises. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East pushed up both oil and propane prices, pressuring oil-based production costs—while simultaneously amplifying the cost advantage of coal-to-olefins. The largest Q3 earnings report in the sector came from Baofeng Energy: Q1–Q3 revenue reached RMB 47.088 billion, up 32.47% year-on-year; net profit attributable to shareholders totaled RMB 14.317 billion, up 59.97%. Its nine-month profit surpassed its full-year 2025 net profit of RMB 11.35 billion. While Hengyi forecast RMB 7.9–8.1 billion for the same period, Baofeng earned RMB 14.3 billion—representing the two non-oil-based routes: one profiting from geographical arbitrage, the other from coal–oil cost misalignment—but both fundamentally driven by the same force: the rewidening of feedstock–product spreads.
