Once tanks are full, producing countries will be forced into large-scale shutdowns—triggering an actual contraction in global crude production capacity, not merely a temporary liquidity shortage. Because cutting or ramping up production is not like turning a faucet on or off; it is an industrial process entailing highly complex efficiency calculations—with one month being the minimum transition period. Next—and what I consider the most critical point—the release of reserves suffers from an inherent delivery lag of approximately 120 days: oil prices will remain unrelieved for at least the first 20 days. This window is ample time for markets to stage a rally. After all, counting from today, the timeline—from presidential authorization, to tendering and auctioning, to loading, shipping, and finally entering refinery systems—takes at least two weeks. The ‘distant water’ simply cannot quench the ‘immediate thirst,’ failing to ease the acute tightness in the current spot market. Intriguingly, natural gas prices surged even more sharply than crude—could it be that Europe has resumed receiving Russian gas? II. Medium-Term Oil Price Trends Appear Increasingly Ambiguous The short-term impact of this reserve release is already evident to everyone! Yet its medium- to long-term effectiveness faces strong counteraction from OPEC+. Core OPEC+ members—including Saudi Arabia and Russia—have consistently targeted a stable oil price range of USD 80–100 per barrel, calibrating their capacity policies accordingly. Previously, OPEC+ had planned to increase daily output by 206,000 barrels starting April 2026. However, following this massive reserve release, market consensus expects that if prices fall temporarily due to the release, OPEC+ will almost certainly postpone its planned output hike—and may even refrain from announcing a new round of production cuts, instead citing ‘field shutdowns’ caused by Iranian drones or missiles. Over the past three years, OPEC+’s production-cutting policies have repeatedly proven effective in supporting oil prices. Its controllable spare capacity remains the world’s sole source of rapidly deployable incremental supply capable of filling supply gaps. Markets have already priced in this strategic tug-of-war and do not believe this reserve release will fundamentally alter the global crude supply-demand balance—hence, they won’t sell off crude positions solely on the news of the release. Coincidentally, markets are also broadly concerned about further escalation of the conflict—even speculating that Iran, amid its own domestic socioeconomic crisis, may launch additional attacks targeting oil and gas infrastructure and maritime shipping lanes.
