Nine-Dimensional Energy | Chapter One, Lecture Nine: Uncertainty Is Also a Huge Opportunity

If, over the next two years, exploration results reveal reserves far exceeding expectations—or if the copper-zinc market outlook becomes significantly more attractive—the consortium can immediately exercise its option, converting its substantial commitment into actual development investment and advancing the mine into construction and production. In this model, the higher the volatility of copper prices, the more valuable the mine becomes. Why? Because you hold the right to 'abandon'—so 'bad news' (a sharp copper price crash) inflicts limited damage (your loss is capped at exploration costs); and because you also hold the right to 'execute,' 'good news' (a copper price surge) offers unlimited upside potential. With the downside locked in and the upside open-ended, greater volatility increases the probability of hitting that 'massive profit' zone—while shielding you from the consequences of hitting the 'massive loss' zone. This is precisely why real options thinking is more critical in energy and resource industries—sectors highly exposed to geopolitical shocks and technological disruption—than in traditional manufacturing. When markets cannot see the direction clearly, conventional managers panic, fearing irreversible missteps; but managers equipped with real options thinking—like the Rio Algom/Inmet consortium back then—feel exhilarated. They ride volatility like surfers in a storm, leveraging massive uncertainty to capture outsized returns. This right to wait and observe is known in finance as the 'option to defer.' It teaches us that, amid fog, if the future will inevitably clarify itself, 'not acting now' is itself a high-value strategic action. The Art of Stepping Forward: Spending Small to Buy Clarity Having grasped the value of 'conversion' and 'waiting,' let’s now examine concrete implementation techniques. In the capital-intensive energy sector, the most common real options strategy is staged investment—or what’s also called a 'compound option.' Recall the protagonist introduced in our previous lecture (Lecture Eight): Ørsted—the Danish company that transformed from a coal giant into a global offshore wind leader (then known as DONG Energy). In Lecture Eight, we analyzed how it used long-term power purchase agreements to hedge price risk; today, we examine another dimension of its success—its investment timing and pacing. Around 2010, offshore wind was still extremely expensive and technologically immature. Had Ørsted announced at the time, 'We will build 100 offshore wind farms, investing €50 billion!' its shareholders would likely have committed it to an asylum. Turbine failure rates were high, deep-water installation was extraordinarily difficult, and subsidy policies for electricity prices remained highly uncertain—each project could become the company’s tombstone. Ørsted adopted a classic 'real options' strategy: it chose to proceed step-by-step. Stage One (Buying a Ticket) It launched small-scale nearshore demonstration projects near the Avedøre power plant. Even earlier, Denmark’s offshore wind industry had already begun incrementally mastering unfamiliar elements—turbines, subsea cables, installation vessels, and operations & maintenance organization—starting with small nearshore wind farms like Vindeby.
