Where do Americans spend their money on pets?

So, where does the money go? Premium-quality food is the top priority, accounting for 66%, followed by new toys and grooming services at 40% and 24%, respectively. U.S. pet owner spending priorities Looking specifically at pet health, 48% of owners adhere strictly to scheduled vaccinations; 46% are willing to pay for high-quality pet food aligned with their household’s spending capacity; 45% ensure their pets get regular exercise; and 42% schedule routine grooming. U.S. pet owner health-demand priorities Notably, expenditures related to pet health represent the fastest-growing segment. In 2025, pet owners are projected to spend $1,135 per pet on health-related costs—$472 on insurance and $663 on veterinary care. Compared to $998 in 2024 ($348 on insurance + $650 on veterinary care), overall spending rose nearly 14%, while insurance spending surged by 36%. 2024/2025 U.S. pet health expenditures Behind this figure lies a sobering reality: 22% of pets experienced a major health incident in 2025—nearly double the 13% rate in 2024. A single emergency visit or surgical procedure can easily push bills past $1,000. It is precisely for this reason that pet insurance is shifting from a 'nice-to-have' to a 'must-have'. Insurance premiums are rising—but veterinary costs aren’t increasing much. This further reflects pet owners’ increasingly pragmatic choices: rather than waiting until something goes wrong and then paying out-of-pocket, they prefer to secure insurance upfront. Prevention is better than cure—but bills don’t lie. One set of survey data deserves closer attention: 61% of owners regard regular veterinary visits as their top priority—and among those visits, 60% are preventive, while only 40% occur reactively after problems arise. Meanwhile, 37% of owners admit that routine check-ups helped them detect health risks early. This indicates a paradigm shift in U.S. pet owners’ health awareness—from 'treat only when sick' to 'proactive defense'. Yet the problem remains: prevention may guard against minor ailments, but it cannot shield owners from sky-high medical bills. Veterinary care accounts for a substantial share of total household pet expenditures. Dog owners spend more annually than cat owners. What causes even greater anxiety is many owners’ concern over whether they can 'afford veterinary care'—driven primarily by cost burdens and appointment accessibility. Moreover, as an increasing number of veterinary clinics are acquired by private equity firms, market concentration rises, pushing prices ever higher. Thus, we observe a paradoxical spending pattern: while most owners grit their teeth to buy premium food, a smaller subset has cut back on pet-related spending in 2025—especially on toys and accessories, deemed 'non-essentials'. Money isn’t being spent less—it’s being spent more wisely. Pets are family, medicine, and a financial safety net. If you look only at the numbers, you might assume pet owners are making rational financial decisions. But when asked 'why?', their answers are all emotional. 31% say their pets helped them endure economic hardship; 30% credit them with helping them weather mental health crises; and 24% say that during their darkest moments—after losing a loved one—it was their furry companions who pulled them through.

In-depth analysis of the North American pet insurance market

Let's go Market segmentation dynamics 1. The growth scissors effect between dog and cat markets The North American pet insurance market’s segmented structure reveals a pronounced shift in species preference. Although canine insurance maintained its dominance in 2024—with $4.08 billion in premium revenue, representing 86.1% of the total market—feline insurance has emerged as the new engine of industry growth. Feline premiums grew 25.7% year-on-year, significantly outpacing canine premiums’ 20.7% growth. This 'scissors effect' reflects structural changes in pet ownership preferences driven by urbanization. As younger consumers gain greater awareness of chronic feline diseases—and insurers roll out more targeted health add-on policies—the share of cats among total insured pets has steadily risen from 17.1% in 2020 to 23.5%. Though the average annual premium for cats is roughly half that for dogs, their high growth potential is reshaping the market’s long-term growth trajectory. Table 1: Average Annual Premiums for Dogs and Cats Across Different Policy Types in the U.S. (2024) 2. Structural evolution of product offerings Accident-and-illness insurance remains the mainstream choice, accounting for over 80% of all U.S. policies. This coverage type addresses a broad spectrum of medical needs—from cancer and infections to digestive disorders. Although its premium is three to four times higher than that of accident-only policies, consumers clearly prefer to pay a premium to hedge against costly pathological expenses. Meanwhile, health and preventive-care add-on policies are becoming key tools for insurers to boost customer retention. By incorporating high-frequency, low-cost routine expenses—such as vaccinations, deworming, and annual check-ups—into coverage, insurance products are evolving from 'compensation after misfortune' into 'daily health companions'. This trend is expected to sustain growth over the coming years and become critical to lowering lapse rates and locking in long-term customer value. 3. Geographic distribution and economic correlation Pet insurance penetration strongly correlates with regional economic conditions and veterinarian density. California is the largest pet insurance market in the U.S., accounting for 18.3% of nationally insured pets and contributing 20.2% of total premiums. New York, Florida, and Texas follow closely. These states share extremely high urbanization rates and expensive veterinary service ecosystems. For instance, elevated veterinary labor costs in California and Massachusetts directly inflate diagnostic and surgical fees—intensifying pet owners’ risk-aversion mindset. In Canada, Ontario—the country’s economic hub—accounts for 36.9% of all insured pets nationwide. British Columbia, though hosting fewer insured pets than Ontario, contributes 25.3% of national premiums—a telling indicator of both the region’s widespread adoption of premium-tier insurance plans and mounting pressure from high medical costs. Let's go Core growth drivers explained The development of the North American pet insurance market results from the combined catalytic effects of socioeconomic factors and medical-technology revolutions. 1. Veterinary medical inflation Rising veterinary service costs constitute the strongest engine driving market growth—but also pose significant challenges to its financial sustainability. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for veterinary services rose 7.6%–7.9% in 2023 and 2024, far exceeding the overall CPI. This structural inflation stems from multiple interwoven factors—including severe shortages of veterinary professionals driving up starting salaries, heavy educational debt forcing clinics to raise service fees, and capital amortization costs associated with advanced MRI and minimally invasive surgical equipment.
