What could be the cause of the fire at Russia’s third-largest refinery—the Ryazan Refinery?

Summary: On the night of July 12, Ukrainian drones launched a strike on Russia’s Syzran Refinery, damaging and igniting multiple critical distillation and catalytic units—further crippling its refining capacity. Ukrainian forces have recently sustained attacks on Russian refining facilities and oil tanker fleets near the Kerch Strait, causing a marked decline in the number of Russian vessels operating in the Sea of Azov and intensifying pressure on Russia’s refined petroleum supply and maritime exports. Russia’s petroleum crisis continued spreading under the cover of darkness on Sunday, July 12, as the Syzran Refinery was struck again by Ukrainian drone swarms. Several areas of the refinery remained ablaze into Monday morning. According to a video report published by the Russian online media outlet Astra on its Telegram channel, dozens of drones conducted a long-range attack on the Syzran Refinery—located in the city of Syzran, Samara Oblast—during the night hours. The report states the attack occurred between the nights of July 11 and 12, 2026. Video footage shows drone swarms converging on the refinery. One drone rammed the AVT-5 unit—a primary distillation facility with an annual capacity of 2.6 million tons—while another detonated the AVT-6 unit—capable of processing 6.3 million tons annually. Following the strikes, both primary distillation units were taken offline. With these units disabled, the refinery cannot produce any refined products—regardless of the operational status of its other facilities. Meanwhile, two drones targeted the LCh-35/11-600 catalytic reforming unit: one collided mid-air with a pipeline, triggering an explosion; the other struck the catalytic reformer directly. The resulting twin fireballs and explosions completed the destruction, fully engulfing the entire catalytic reforming unit in flames. Photos and videos provided by local residents—and republished by Astra—showed fires still burning across the Syzran Refinery compound as of 7 a.m. local time (Musk Time) on Sunday morning. Thick smoke loomed over the site, visible from up to 10 kilometers away. On Sunday evening, the municipal authorities of Syzran acknowledged the drone strike in a Telegram post—but claimed the refinery fire resulted from falling “drone debris.” Syzran Refinery JSC (SNPZ) is one of the largest refining enterprises in Samara Oblast and operates under Rosneft PJSC.
