Amplified by rising crude prices and widening refining margins, international aviation fuel prices have surged even faster than crude oil, now nearing USD 175 per barrel—nearly double the typical annual level of around USD 88 per barrel. Even though airlines hedge part of their exposure through fuel futures contracts, hedging capacity remains limited; thus, the vast majority of increased costs ultimately get passed on to consumers via higher fuel surcharges and ticket prices.
