South Africa's 'black tech'—coal-to-liquid fuel—born out of international sanctions!

Today, let’s talk about something utterly outrageous yet impressively hardcore: South Africa—nearly devoid of domestic oil reserves—managed, under global embargo, to turn coal into gasoline! This is nothing short of a Hail Mary in the energy world! Hi everyone, I’m Feizi Yu. First, the ‘A-side’—background: a life-or-death black tech born from geopolitical strangulation. What was South Africa’s situation? Coal-rich, oil-poor, and literally running on empty. Back then, due to apartheid, the world imposed a full petroleum embargo—cars couldn’t run, planes couldn’t fly, and the entire nation was choked into near-paralysis. Most countries would’ve panicked—but South Africa took an unexpectedly brilliant turn: ‘You won’t sell us oil? Fine—we’ll make it ourselves!’ They imported Germany’s Fischer–Tropsch synthesis technology, heavily modified it, and executed it relentlessly: crush coal, gasify it, catalyze it—and voilà! Black coal balls transformed into crystal-clear gasoline. This isn’t magic—it’s a technological miracle forged at the very edge of desperation.

What are the performance metrics—e.g., octane rating—of South African coal-to-liquid gasoline? What are the performance drawbacks and production costs of South African coal-to-diesel fuel?

Sasol, the South African company, possesses the most systematic and mature indirect coal liquefaction technology globally, primarily employing iron- or cobalt-based low-temperature slurry-phase Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. At its Secunda complex, Sasol operates the world’s largest coal-to-liquid facility—producing 8 million tonnes annually. Regarding South Africa’s coal-to-liquid industry, Sasol is currently the only company whose operations I know in detail. Its products exhibit exceptionally high cetane numbers (at least 70, versus the typical range of 45–55), ultra-low sulfur content (below 5 ppm), minimal aromatic hydrocarbons (less than 1%), and outstanding low-temperature fluidity. Moreover, the indirect liquefaction process significantly reduces ash and other waste byproducts, while also relaxing coal quality requirements and lowering operating pressure demands. However, this comes at a cost: Sasol’s technology—like all indirect liquefaction methods—is less energy-efficient than direct liquefaction. Low overall efficiency and relatively high CO₂ emissions remain persistent pain points across the entire coal-to-liquid industry; Sasol’s efficiency is comparatively lower, yet still within an acceptable range—because, frankly, all coal-to-liquid technologies face these same fundamental challenges.
