What is the Kairos unit's role in Ukraine's deep-strike campaign, and how has its capability evolved?

Kairos is a secretive Ukrainian deep-strike battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel 'Ray' that has evolved from flying early mid-range drones with ~100 km range and bowling-ball-sized warheads to deploying small, cheap cruise missiles that strike deep inside Russia and Russian-occupied Ukraine—targeting air defenses, oil refineries, gas terminals, and Azov Sea tankers. Its expanded capability relies on Ukrainian manufacturing advances, detailed mission planning using Western satellite imagery, intelligence integration, and specialized expertise (e.g., energy industry veterans identifying vulnerabilities), as demonstrated in strikes like the September attack on a Moscow-area oil refinery.

Why are deep strikes into Russia more challenging than strikes in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, and what role does Starlink play?

Deep strikes into Russia are significantly more difficult because SpaceX’s Starlink service is shut off inside Russia, depriving Ukrainian operators of reliable beyond-line-of-sight communication—unlike in Russian-occupied Ukraine, where a negotiated 'white list' with SpaceX permits Starlink use for drone operations across that territory. Without Starlink, alternative communication mechanisms have proven less effective or reliable; Ray recounted that during recent Starlink speed throttling, Kairos’ drones over occupied Ukraine 'simply dropped out of the sky', underscoring Starlink’s irreplaceable role in real-time drone control and post-strike intelligence gathering.
