However, as tech-stock selloffs intensified and concerns mounted over AI-related financing risks, some capital rotated into long-dated U.S. Treasuries for safety—causing the 10-year yield to drop roughly 14 basis points on October 15, retreating to around 5.05% (a move also executed by Bessent). This shift illustrates how bond markets simultaneously reflect two distinct forces: inflation determines pressure on interest rates, while risk aversion drives safe-haven inflows into Treasuries. These forces can dominate sequentially—so a decline in Treasury yields does not necessarily signal renewed economic optimism, nor does it imply an immediate improvement in corporate funding conditions. Rather, it reveals growing internal contradictions among large institutional investors! When the risk-free rate reflected by U.S. Treasury yields interacts with monetary policy expectations; when corporate credit spreads reflect default risk; and when equity markets reflect expectations for firms’ long-term growth and valuation— if all three indicators deteriorate simultaneously, stress may escalate beyond mere valuation adjustments into actual financing and operational challenges! For instance, if Treasury yields fall but AI firms’ credit spreads continue widening, it signals that easing in the risk-free rate has yet to resolve companies’ underlying credit issues. Therefore, at present, one cannot rely solely on Treasury yields or the VIX volatility index! Markets have grown far more complex—exceeding the analytical capacity of most individual investors. While betting on a SOX rebound remains logically plausible, sharp post-new-high crashes are often interpreted as topping signals—and SOX is not aligned with primary inflation-driven trends such as energy, defense, or utilities dividends. Markets now demand definitive liquidity injections. We should proactively embrace assets generating reliable cash flows; otherwise, even if each rally sets a new high, subsequent declines tend to be steeper—and the tradable range continues shrinking. Moreover, U.S. equities are now impacting Asian emerging markets: SK Hynix’s overnight 5% plunge alone could trigger another ‘circuit breaker’ event on Korea’s KOSPI Monday, forcing the Financial Services Commission to intervene. Meanwhile, oil prices may remain uncontainable—pushing up prices of hedging commodities like gold, which may only manage weak rebounds. II. International Oil Prices Rebreach $100: If only AI stocks were falling, this episode could still be interpreted as an intra-tech-sector valuation correction. But sustained oil price increases complicate matters significantly—and this time, oil may well surge toward $120, or even $150. Notably, Trump’s recent TACO initiative appears increasingly ineffective in boosting his electoral prospects! On October 16, WTI crude for November delivery closed at $101.41 per barrel—a daily gain of 3.5% and a weekly rise exceeding 10%; Brent crude climbed to $109.86, its highest level since May 19. This marks the first time in a month that WTI’s front-month contract has reclaimed the $100 threshold. The primary catalyst behind this oil rally is escalating geopolitical risk in the Middle East. Houthi militants attacked facilities linked to Saudi Aramco; a commercial vessel struck a mine and sank near the Strait of Hormuz; and Iran signaled it might adopt new tactics targeting shipping. Simultaneously, Ukrainian strikes against Russian refineries have further heightened market anxiety over energy supply security.

On one hand, surging oil prices have reinforced inflation expectations, constraining the Fed’s room to cut rates; the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield remains stubbornly near 5%, continuing to suppress valuations for growth-oriented stocks. On the other, AI infrastructure investment is scaling rapidly, prompting market skepticism about whether these colossal capital outlays will translate into commensurate profits and cash flow. Compounding this, AI tech stocks had already surged substantially earlier this year amid lofty expectations—leading investors to aggressively pare positions ahead of earnings reports, thereby amplifying the downturn. In my view, this is less a collapse than a transition—AI stocks shifting from a phase of valuation expansion to one of earnings verification. The long-term technological promise of AI hasn’t been undermined by a few days of share-price weakness. Yet after such dramatic prior gains, the next leg upward hinges critically on whether corporate earnings can meet sky-high market expectations. As a former NVIDIA nanoshareholder and computer science researcher, I’ll share perspectives from both technical and financial angles below. As a computer scientist, I remain optimistic about AI’s long-term technological trajectory; as a retail investor, however, I believe the market must reassess AI supply-chain valuations. First, let’s clarify a fundamental truth: the success of a technological revolution—and whether investors profit from it—are two entirely separate matters. The dot-com bubble burst in 2000 did not halt the internet’s transformative impact on human society over the following two decades. Yet many investors who correctly foresaw the internet’s future still suffered devastating losses. Today’s AI may follow a similar path. I. Technical Perspective: AI remains in a rapid development phase—with no signs yet of technological maturation ending. From a technological standpoint, declaring a full-blown AI bubble burst remains premature. Consider several recently released performance figures: NVIDIA’s latest quarterly report (released August 2026) showed revenue of $96.2 billion—up 106% year-on-year—with data center business revenue reaching $89 billion, up 117%. On October 15, TSMC reported Q3 revenue of $46.72 billion—up ~51% year-on-year—and forecast Q4 revenue to climb further to $52.3–$54.3 billion. These numbers confirm that, at least for now, AI compute demand has translated into tangible chip orders and corporate revenues. Of course, NVIDIA’s and TSMC’s strong results alone do not prove the entire AI industry has achieved sustainable commercial returns. Here lies a crucial distinction: companies selling compute power are profiting—but that doesn’t guarantee buyers of that compute (e.g., cloud providers, enterprises) will ultimately generate equivalent profits. NVIDIA’s customers are investing enormous sums building data centers, purchasing GPUs, memory, networking gear, and supporting infrastructure. Whether those investments yield adequate returns via AI subscriptions, enterprise software, cloud services, or productivity gains remains unproven—and will require much longer validation. This is the core commercial challenge facing today’s AI industry. That said, AI’s application frontier continues expanding steadily.
