NORTHERN LIGHTS Location: Norway Shell Norway, TotalEnergies, and Equinor are jointly developing the Northern Lights project. This initiative aims to transport and permanently store CO₂—sourced from industrial plants in eastern Norway and other origins—in a reservoir beneath the North Sea. The project’s first phase is scheduled for completion by mid-2024, with an initial storage capacity of approximately 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂. According to data from the International Energy Agency, cement production accounts for roughly 7% of global CO₂ emissions. The Northern Lights project is collaborating with HeidelbergCement to help reduce its emissions. Additionally, in 2022, Northern Lights signed a letter of intent with Yara, a crop nutrition company, to provide transportation and storage services. Starting in 2024, Yara’s ammonia and fertilizer plant in the Netherlands is expected to collect, compress, and liquefy around 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, which will then be shipped to Norway and permanently stored 2,600 meters below the North Sea seabed. The Samuel family had already been engaged in the antique trade since the early 19th century—and seashells were among their key commodities, giving rise to the name 'Shell'. Due to import-export requirements, Shell Transport and Trading Company Limited was formally established in 1897. Fundamentally, the Samuel family’s Shell was a logistics company. So how did it come to partner with the long-established Dutch Royal Dutch Petroleum Company? Although the Dutch had earned the epithet 'the maritime coachmen of the world', they suffered defeat in the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War during the 18th century; by the 19th century, maritime trade was dominated by Britain. To achieve global commercial expansion, Royal Dutch Petroleum and Shell Transport and Trading Company merged in April 1907 to form 'The Royal Dutch Shell Group'. Royal Dutch held a 60% stake and oversaw oil production and refining, while the Samuel family held 40%, managing storage and transportation. At its founding, the company’s logo was not the instantly recognizable red-and-yellow cartoon-style shell we know today, but rather a plain black-and-white shell image.
