China's paint industry: market size and development trends in 2023

Source: CCIC According to the '14th Five-Year Plan for China’s Coating Industry', by 2025, the output of container coatings will reach 400,000 tons, accounting for 2.67% of total output; steel structure coatings will reach 3 million tons (20% of total output); coatings for petrochemical equipment will reach 1.5 million tons (10%); automotive coatings will reach 3 million tons (20%); marine coatings will reach 1.5 million tons (10%); and coatings for high-speed railways and highways will reach 1.5 million tons (10%). This indicates that the market potential for various industrial coatings will expand over the next five years. IV. Competitive Analysis of the Coating Industry (1) Market Concentration in the Coating Industry The coating industry is a classic fragmented sector characterized by intense competition and a large number of enterprises. According to the '14th Five-Year Plan for China’s Coating Industry', China’s coating industry will further optimize its structure and increase concentration by 2025. It is projected that the number of designated large-scale enterprises will decline to approximately 800; their combined coating output will reach 27 million tons—90% of total output—and their sales revenue will reach RMB 350 billion, representing 94.6% of total industry revenue. (2) Competitive Landscape of the Coating Industry The coating industry is a fully competitive market with no obvious monopolistic or oligopolistic features. Its competitive landscape exhibits both a 'head effect' and a 'long-tail effect'. The top ten coating enterprises in China are: Huarun Paint, SKSHU, Nippon Paint, U.S.-based PPG Industries, Netherlands-based AkzoNobel, Germany-based BASF, Japan-based Nippon Paint (Japan Paint), Japan-based Teijin, U.S.-based Sherwin-Williams, and Germany-based Huntsman. Among these, Huarun Paint, SKSHU, and Nippon Paint are domestic Chinese brands; all others are foreign brands. This reveals that foreign brands hold a substantial market share in China’s coating industry, though domestic brands also perform impressively. V. Market Trend Analysis of the Coating Industry (1) Demand Trends in the Coating Industry Changes in demand for coatings are primarily driven by economic development levels, demographic structure, consumer mindsets, and environmental protection policies. Regarding economic development, as China transitions from high-speed growth to high-quality development, coating demand will shift from quantity-driven to quality-driven, demanding higher performance, quality, and functionality from coatings. Demographically, accelerating population aging and urbanization will drive demand toward personalization and diversification, increasing expectations for color variety, stylistic expression, and health-related attributes. In terms of consumer mindset, rising consumer awareness and purchasing power will shift demand from single-function products toward comprehensive solutions, heightening requirements for service, user experience, and innovation. With regard to environmental policy, growing national emphasis on environmental protection and energy conservation will push demand toward greener products, imposing stricter requirements on coatings’ environmental friendliness, energy efficiency, and sustainability. (2) Supply Trends in the Coating Industry Changes in coating supply are mainly influenced by technological innovation, industrial restructuring, and corporate competitive strategies.

Who Really Rules America? (I)

For thirty years, the Cleveland and Morgan financial groups have been locked in a struggle to control several major railway companies. Through Allegheny Corporation—a holding company they seized in 1937—they gained control of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and later the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. In 1954, to complete a transcontinental rail line connecting the East and West coasts, Eaton and his prominent associate Young launched an assault on the New York Central Railroad—a long-standing Morgan property. At the time, the Morgan group was at its weakest point, yet it still mounted a vigorous counterattack, affording the public a rare glimpse into the ferocious infighting among elite financial titans. Eaton’s faction achieved near-victory in 1954 but failed to consolidate it. They suffered losses when attempting to acquire Midland Transport Company—the entity holding a large block of shares in the New York Central Bank under Morgan’s control. Consequently, the Morgans retained only a minority stake in the railway sector. The Rockefeller financial group, which had provided behind-the-scenes support to the Cleveland group in 1954, later withdrew that support. Meanwhile, the Morgan group gradually reasserted its position within the New York Central Bank. Simultaneously, the Rockefellers acquired the Missouri-Pacific Railroad from the Cleveland group. Misfortunes multiplied for the Cleveland group: between 1961 and 1963, they lost control of Allegheny Corporation, which passed—under the influential backing of Manufacturer’s Hanover Trust Bank—to Allen Kirby, heir to the Woolworth fortune. The New York Central Bank reverted to the control of the Bank of New York, clearing the way for its merger with the Pennsylvania Railroad. This merger was a Morgan Bank initiative, and the newly formed Penn Central Railroad placed the Morgans in a leadership role. The Philadelphia, Mellon, and Manufacturer’s Hanover Trust Bank groups jointly shared control over this largest railroad company through Allegheny Corporation and the Morgan group. Excluded from this arrangement, the Cleveland group fought desperately—but futilely—against the merger. Yet they did not relent. Following the absorption of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad by their Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, the Cleveland group is now attempting to assemble a new large-scale eastern railway consortium to compete with Penn Central. Bankers of California The oldest West Coast financial group is the San Francisco financial group, composed of old Bay Area families, financiers, industrialists, and assorted other characters. The Bechtel family stands at its center. This group revolves around San Francisco’s three largest banks: Crocker Citizens Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, and Bank of California. Their combined assets amount to roughly $12 billion—but unlike certain Eastern banks, a larger portion of these assets is invested in small consumer loans. As a result, the San Francisco group controls only a few nationwide corporations, including the Western Pacific Railroad, Del Monte Foods, Crown Zellerbach, Pacific Gas & Electric, and several others. The San Francisco group maintains significant ties to the Morgan group through Stephen Bechtel, who serves as a director of both Wells Fargo Bank and Morgan Guaranty Trust Company.
