This industry is critically important to Singapore, accounting for roughly 20% of the real economy and about 1–2% of GDP. Superficially, that share seems modest—but recall: Singapore’s financial center isn’t a Hong Kong-style equity-financing hub. Rather, much of its financial activity is anchored in petroleum products—such as marine bunker fuels, maritime insurance, and oil price benchmarking.
