Countering China's Lithium Industry? U.S. Discovers World's Largest Lithium Deposit—Just How Rich Is It?

Viewing this crisis through the lens of the rare-earth industry? Lithium—the lightest metallic element found in nature—is highly reactive and thus typically occurs only in compound form. Consequently, current lithium deposits exist primarily in three forms: (1) lithium-bearing ores such as spodumene and lepidolite, embedded underground; (2) lithium-rich brine concentrated in salt lakes; and (3) lithium embedded within volcanic sedimentary deposits—exactly what the U.S. has just discovered. Moreover, volcanic activity often triggers elemental enrichment, raising the probability of uniquely lithium-rich clay minerals forming. With favorable conditions, such clays can also be relatively easy to separate—a stroke of luck the U.S. appears to have just drawn. Provided transportation infrastructure is in place and local Indigenous communities and environmental activists are appeased, technical extraction challenges are comparatively modest. The real bottleneck lies in lithium extraction technology: currently, only two mature industrial pathways exist—hard-rock (ore-based) lithium extraction and brine-based lithium extraction. Because volcanic sedimentary deposits are geologically scarce and highly heterogeneous, no comprehensive, standardized lithium-extraction industrial chain has yet emerged for them; the sector remains firmly in its infancy. This developmental stage is exceptionally delicate: if fortune smiles, U.S. firms could pioneer proprietary technologies akin to those developed for shale oil—enabling geologists to scour the globe for volcanic clay lithium deposits and extract lithium at low cost. If not, however, the U.S. may end up merely laying the groundwork for others’ success. At this point, the answer to our opening question—“Why would the U.S., which ceased publicly disclosing lithium resource reserve data back in 2008, now loudly proclaim the discovery of a new lithium deposit?”—becomes self-evident. The U.S. needs a domestic lithium-extraction industrial chain. Currently, Silver Peak Lithium operates the sole commercially active lithium production facility in the United States—located in Nevada. Yet Silver Peak relies exclusively on brine-based extraction and possesses little experience or technological advantage in processing lithium from volcanic clay deposits. In terms of output, Silver Peak produces only 5,000 tons of lithium carbonate annually—dwarfed by its Chilean parent company Albemarle’s 85,000-ton annual output. The primary reason? Far higher labor and operational costs domestically. This stark contrast underscores the extreme underdevelopment of the U.S. lithium-extraction industrial ecosystem. Announcing the discovery of an exceptionally rich, easily accessible lithium deposit thus serves as the most compelling olive branch imaginable. If luck holds, one or more U.S. enterprises could leverage this deposit to develop proprietary core technologies—and offset part of America’s high labor costs using the deposit’s exceptional grade—eventually competing head-to-head with China’s $2,000-per-ton lithium extraction cost. That would yield a competitively priced domestic lithium feedstock, nurturing a robust electric vehicle supply chain on home soil. Of course, ideals are lush—but reality? 03. Has the Pitfall of ‘Industrial Upgrading’ Struck Again? Before delving deeper into the lithium supply chain, let’s recall some historical facts. In 1949, while prospecting for uranium, American geologists discovered a large rare-earth deposit at Mountain Pass, California. At the time, the strategic value of rare earths was unrecognized; they were used mainly in lighter flints. But soon, europium—one of the 17 rare-earth elements—sparked a color television revolution. Later, neodymium was developed into powerful neodymium magnets; other rare-earth metals became indispensable in defense systems and critical catalysts for petroleum refining—drawing global attention to rare-earth mining and processing.
