Gunvor, having originated from providing export logistics services for crude oil, concentrates its operations on crude oil, refined products, and natural gas—while also maintaining some presence in the coal sector. 1.2 Financial Performance In 2016, impacted by the global slump in commodity prices, the financial performance of all four major oil trading companies deteriorated. Glencore and Trafigura achieved modest year-on-year revenue growth—3.8% and 0.92%, respectively—whereas Vitol and Gunvor recorded negative revenue growth, with Gunvor’s decline reaching 26.6% (see Table 1). Regarding net profit, Glencore outperformed the other three firms: its net profit turned from a loss of USD 4.964 billion in 2015 to a profit of USD 1.379 billion in 2016—achieving a full turnaround. Trafigura’s 2016 revenue rose slightly compared to 2015, but its net profit fell by 15.79% year-on-year. Gunvor’s net profit was disappointing, amounting to only USD 320 million in 2016—a sharp 74.4% decline from the previous year. In terms of asset size, Glencore’s assets stood markedly above those of the other three companies in 2016—at USD 124.6 billion—driven largely by large-scale acquisitions and equity investments in enterprises. This reflects Glencore’s identity as a capital-intensive, asset-heavy company, with metals and mining assets constituting the overwhelming majority of its total assets.
