What is the current status of the US-Iran interim deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to the news?

As of Friday, Iran had not finalized or approved the proposed memorandum of understanding, with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei yet to agree to the text; Iranian officials confirmed they are still reviewing the document and that not all clauses—likely part of a 14-point agreement—are finalized, contradicting Trump’s claim that the deal was scheduled for signing on Sunday.

What are the main sticking points preventing the US and Iran from finalizing the interim deal?

Key sticking points include Iran’s demand that the US unfreeze tens of billions of dollars of Iranian funds held in countries like Qatar, and the US insistence that Iran destroy or dilute its stockpiles of high-enriched uranium—what Trump calls 'Nuclear Dust'—with US officials stating Iran would receive no immediate financial relief and only benefit financially if it complies with terms such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic.

President Trump claims an interim peace deal reopening the Strait of Hormuz will be signed Sunday, though Iranian officials state they are still reviewing the text. Tensions have already driven oil prices up over 40% this year, prompting record drawdowns of emergency petroleum stockpiles.
