The aftermath of Trump's $5,000 check proposal

The White House stated: 'The same leadership that shattered old Washington boundaries once thought impossible is now ready to put $5,000 directly into Americans’ pockets.' Yet it offered no specific details. A White House official pushed back against claims that Trump had caught his aides off guard, saying Trump 'discussed the idea with senior staff before the speech. There were no surprises.' White House spokesperson Davis Ingle did not directly address, in a statement, the prospect of issuing $5,000 checks to all American adults should Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress. He said: 'The pessimists and naysayers have long doubted President Trump. With the continued support of the American people, President Trump will keep delivering real results.' Trump’s unexpected pledge came as he struggles with growing voter dissatisfaction over the cost of living and his economic policies. Polls for months have shown deep public frustration with the president’s handling of inflation. The ongoing war with Iran has only worsened the broader economic environment facing Republicans: gasoline and diesel prices have surged again in recent weeks, with no clear end in sight. This week, as Republicans gathered in Dallas, both global and U.S. benchmark oil prices climbed above $100 per barrel, and diesel averaged a record $5.98 per gallon on Thursday. Trump has repeatedly downplayed the high cost of living, calling the term itself a problem invented by Democrats to politically damage him—and insisting the U.S. is experiencing 'the most successful two years financially and in every other way.' Yet, the administration has increasingly emphasized recent initiatives aimed at lowering certain everyday costs—such as ground beef and select prescription drugs—implicitly acknowledging that economic hardship is dragging down the Republican Party. Trump previously approved two rounds of $1,200 stimulus checks for Americans during the 2020 pandemic; since then, he has repeatedly returned to the idea of direct cash payments to voters as a means of winning political support. Last year, he floated the possibility of a $5,000 'DOGE dividend,' linking it to purported savings from his proposed cuts to the federal workforce. More recently, Trump pledged $2,000 checks funded by tariff revenue. Neither materialized. Trump’s latest proposal faces even slimmer odds—a reality prompting many skeptics, including some Trump allies, to dismiss it as purely political theater. 'Let me be crystal clear: I strongly support winning the midterms, and I love this administration—but I strongly oppose bread-and-circuses bribery,' Republican megadonor Joe Randle, a close associate of Donald Trump, wrote on X Wednesday night. Sources say Randle co-hosted a major fundraising event Wednesday evening on the convention floor alongside Donald Trump Jr. and other prominent Republicans. Congressional Republicans would need to draft and pass legislation authorizing payments exceeding $1 trillion—a sum, according to Congressional Budget Office data, that would surpass more than half of the government’s total discretionary spending for fiscal year 2025. While some lawmakers immediately backed the idea—Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno pledged to have a bill ready before November—the proposal reportedly caught Republican leadership off guard, with no prior discussions held among top party officials.

Trump claims 'almost all goods' are getting cheaper—yet collides with an undeniable, harsh reality

Even Vice President JD Vance appeared to acknowledge on Wednesday, during a podcast interview, that things aren’t going entirely according to plan. 'Give us one more chance,' Vance said when asked what he’d tell voters before the election. Unintended consequences According to John W. Diamond, Director of the Center for Public Finance at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, interest-rate hikes may be the Federal Reserve’s best—and practically only—available tool to fight inflation, but they are a blunt instrument. 'That means rate hikes could further slow weaker sectors of the economy—like housing—while barely affecting the strongest sector: sustained investment in artificial intelligence,' he said. Trump’s defense of AI development and data centers represents another issue on which he diverges from many voters. Economy: both the path to victory—and the road to defeat Trump and the Republicans leveraged voter anger over inflation and economic anxiety to deliver a crushing defeat to Democrats in the 2024 election. Now, they must explain a fact: two years of Republican governance have failed to solve the problem—at least in voters’ eyes. According to a recent New York Times/Siena College poll, Democrats hold a clear advantage in reclaiming the House of Representatives. Unsurprisingly, the economy and inflation rank among the top issues voters cite. For Trump, he has already lost voter confidence on these very questions. Three-quarters of voters say the economy is only fair or poor; 73% disapprove of his handling of the cost of living; and 62% disapprove of his handling of the overall economy. Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat and House Minority Leader, opened a recent press conference almost verbatim quoting that New York Times poll. He said Trump promised a 'golden age'—but delivered a 'rotten age.' 'The economy is not moving in the right direction—it is failing ordinary Americans. Gasoline prices have risen, grocery prices have risen, interest rates have risen, housing costs have risen, and health insurance premiums have risen,' Jeffries said. Democrats launch offensives in red states These economic figures largely explain why Democrats feel competitive in Senate races once considered safe Republican seats—especially in heartland states like Kansas and Iowa. Democratic candidates such as Pastor Adam Hamilton in Kansas and Josh Turek in Iowa are making populist promises focused on housing and energy costs. In Iowa, Republican candidate Representative Ashley Hinson runs ads touting bipartisan cooperation—a message decidedly un-Trumpian. Trump’s policies haven’t helped lower the cost of living With international tensions persisting and inflation proving stubborn, U.S. diesel and gasoline prices continue to climb. Trump promised two years ago to bring down prices—but the policies he has pursued as president may not have helped curb inflation. ► His opposition to AI regulation has given big tech companies ample room to spend. Massive borrowing and spending by AI firms have driven significant inflation in chip prices, electricity, and construction materials. ► The tariffs he pledged—and defended—have made goods more expensive. Rather than backing down, Trump escalated by launching a trade war against Canada. And actions he’s taken to combat inflation have often angered his own supporters. Republican Senate candidates in Iowa, Ashley Hinson, and in Kansas, Senator Roger Marshall—both ranchers themselves—have expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s decision to import more beef to lower meat prices.
