The Grand Confrontation at the White House: Did Zelenskyy Achieve His Ideal Outcome?

According to the Financial Times, Europe has pledged $100 billion—ten times the $10 billion figure cited by Zelenskyy—to purchase weapons and ammunition from the U.S. for onward transfer to Ukraine. The U.S. and Ukraine also reached a $50 billion agreement on drone production. Furthermore, Ukraine refused to make any territorial concessions, insisting that a ceasefire is merely the first step toward peace—and rejected Putin’s proposal to freeze the front line in exchange for Ukrainian withdrawal from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. To help Trump grasp Ukraine’s position, Ukrainian staff brought a battlefield situation map to the meeting. Standing before the map, Zelenskyy explained to Trump the grave danger of withdrawal: pulling Ukrainian forces out would mean surrendering, at no cost to Russia, the heavily fortified defensive lines that Russian forces had failed to breach over eleven and a half years—and would turn this territory into a future Russian springboard for offensive operations. Trump, in turn, boasted: “Ukraine gets weapons; America gets money.” It must be said—the European official who devised this plan is truly astute, striking precisely at Trump’s Achilles’ heel: if he refuses arms sales, he will inevitably alienate major Republican donors—the defense industry. Trump genuinely does not care whether Russia launches further offensives in the future; he only seeks what he calls “peace” during his own term. Some Trump supporters, masquerading as rational, moderate commentators, argue: “Ukraine is already losing on the battlefield and cannot reclaim lost territory through war—so isn’t it beneficial for Trump to help end the war and prevent further territorial losses?” They deliberately or inadvertently ignore the truth—that it was Trump’s return to office that placed Ukraine at a battlefield disadvantage; that it was Trump’s cutoff of weapons supplies and intelligence support that caused Ukrainian forces to lose large swathes of the Kursk region previously under their control. It was also Trump who sowed deep divisions among European countries! Most importantly, they fail to see that Russia itself has reached the end of its strength. Before meeting Zelenskyy, reporters caught Trump uttering an extremely significant remark in private: “Putin wants to reach (a peace) agreement.” This reflects Putin’s true intention—not because he loves peace, but because he knows he lacks the resources to sustain the war for several more years. As I write this, breaking news has just emerged: Trump’s closed-door meeting with Zelenskyy and European leaders has concluded. Trump posted a lengthy statement, containing one crucial sentence: “At the conclusion of the meeting, I called President Putin and began arranging a summit between him and President Zelenskyy—the location remains to be determined… The participants will be the two presidents and myself.” Merkel’s successor, Friedrich Merz, told reporters that Zelenskyy will meet Putin within two weeks. In summary— For Zelenskyy, this “Grand Confrontation at the White House” yielded a successful outcome—slightly exceeding my expectations. First, the entire meeting proceeded harmoniously, with no unpleasant incidents—a result largely attributable to the presence of European leaders accompanying Zelenskyy. Had they not been present, Trump would most likely have pressured Zelenskyy into major concessions, risking a breakdown of talks. Second, on the issue of “territorial exchange,” Zelenskyy clearly affirmed Ukraine’s stance: no withdrawal from Donetsk—and Trump did not force him to accept Russia’s demand, at least not publicly. Third, Ukraine secured a form of security guarantee: although NATO’s Article V was not formally extended, Trump agreed to allow Europe to procure massive quantities of weapons from the U.S. for Ukraine.

Zelenskyy visited the White House to meet Trump again after six months—what outcomes did this meeting produce, and what impact might it have on the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia?

This time, he even engaged in a friendly exchange with Glenn, a journalist from Real America's Voice. Back in February, Glenn had criticized Zelenskyy for always wearing green T-shirts. Zelenskyy repeatedly expressed gratitude for Trump’s continued support—delivering abundant emotional value, effectively interrupting Trump’s rhetorical performances. Even when Trump digressed—criticizing America’s electoral system, Biden, or accusing U.S. media of constantly smearing him—Zelenskyy remained remarkably patient and calm. Yet Trump’s stance toward Russia has softened. On Monday, he reiterated his new position: “I don’t think you need a ceasefire.” Moreover, the U.S. president appears to have pledged not to impose additional economic sanctions to compel Russia to halt hostilities. (2) Regarding security guarantees: European Concept One: Establish a fully equipped, comprehensive peacekeeping force to supplement the Ukrainian military. The problem? It would require tens of thousands of troops to serve as a credible deterrent. Concept Two: Deploy a much smaller “tripwire” force. This force would lack defensive capability—it’s essentially a gamble that Russia won’t attack. Concept Three: Establish an observer force. This force would likely be very small—around several hundred personnel—tasked solely with monitoring and reporting on military activities.
