The Iran war is placing unbearable pressure on global capitalist enterprises.

This turmoil represents yet another severe systemic blow to the global business community—following the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. With no ceasefire in sight, economic outlooks for the remainder of this year have turned broadly pessimistic across the board. Whirlpool, a major home appliance manufacturer, has already slashed its full-year earnings forecast by half and suspended dividend payments. Its CEO, Marc Bitzer, candidly told analysts: 'The industry-wide downturn we’re seeing now is comparable to the global financial crisis—and even worse than previous recessions.' Wall Street analysts note that although many multinational corporations have managed to maintain performance—so far—on momentum alone, slowing economic growth will erode their pricing power. Against a backdrop of weak demand, fixed costs will become increasingly difficult to absorb. This means the real profit shock will hit fully in Q2 and the second half of this year. Meanwhile, companies are forced to pass on rising costs through continuous price hikes—a move that will further fuel inflation and severely damage already fragile consumer confidence. Bitzer’s remarks confirm this reality: consumers today, he says, prefer repairing old appliances rather than buying new ones—they are all tightening their belts. This pie chart quantifies the profound impact of the current Middle East conflict on the global business world and outlines the most common countermeasures adopted by affected companies. It is based on an analysis of press releases and earnings call transcripts from 279 companies. The data show that businesses worldwide are reacting like startled birds—scrambling to limit losses amid surging costs. The most common direct impact is financial hemorrhaging: as many as 62 companies explicitly reported suffering a 'financial hit'—the most prevalent consequence among affected firms. Close behind are broad operational contractions: 45 companies were forced to implement 'operational changes', signaling serious disruptions to supply chains and day-to-day operations; 41 opted for the most direct cost-pass-through method—'price hikes'; and 31 had to 'withdraw or cut guidance', reflecting deep uncertainty about their profitability this year. Additionally, 27 companies issued 'profit or sales warnings'. Beyond these mainstream responses, many firms resorted to more marginal—but equally drastic—loss-mitigation measures, including: • 11 companies introduced 'surcharge fees' to offset soaring fuel costs outside existing contracts; • 9 invoked 'force majeure' clauses, declaring themselves unable to fulfill contractual obligations due to the war; • 8 chose to 'limit return to shareholders'—i.e., suspending or cutting dividends and share buybacks; • 5 reported negative 'impact on IPO/deals' caused by the conflict.

The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer announced a £55 billion tax-increase and spending-cut plan and declared the UK economy has entered recession. What information is worth noting?

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Announces £55 Billion Tax-Increase and Spending-Cut Plan, Declaring UK Economy in Recession By Li Menglin, China Economic Net; Edited by Tan Yuhan On November 17 local time, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt unveiled the Autumn Statement—the first budget plan released by the UK’s newly formed government. Its centerpiece is a £55 billion package of spending cuts and tax increases aimed at narrowing the UK’s fiscal gap and restoring investor confidence in the country’s economic policies. The Statement raises income and dividend tax rates, increases the 'windfall tax' on oil and gas companies, and prioritizes 'stability, growth, and public services'. The tax-increase measures under Hunt’s plan are projected to generate £25 billion in additional government revenue, including: lowering the income threshold for the 45% top marginal tax rate; reducing the capital gains tax allowance; raising the oil and gas 'windfall tax' from 25% to 35%; imposing a temporary 45% tax on electricity generation; and introducing a tax on electric vehicles starting in 2025. Spending cuts are expected to yield £30 billion in savings, including: raising the annual energy bill cap for average UK households from £2,500 to £3,000 over the 12 months beginning next April; maintaining the foreign aid budget at 0.5% of GDP (i.e., no increase); and encouraging welfare recipients to re-enter the labor market. Government expenditure will rise in certain areas: welfare and pension payments will be increased in line with inflation; the national minimum wage will rise by 9.7%; and spending on education and healthcare systems will be significantly increased.
