Following the outbreak of war, global oil stocks declined at the fastest pace in history—using reserves to maintain relative price stability. But inventories cannot be depleted indefinitely; what happens once they run dry? We’re depleting fiscal reserves. Many countries have deployed subsidies, tax cuts, and price controls to cushion energy price hikes for households. These measures work short-term but worsen fiscal conditions. Where does the money come from? Borrowing—leading inevitably to mounting debt. We’re depleting monetary policy reserves. Markets widely expected major central banks to enter a rate-cutting cycle this year—but rebounding inflation halted those plans. The longer high interest rates persist, the more fragile sectors—commercial real estate, SMEs, and highly indebted emerging markets—risk breakdown. More troubling still, the war’s impacts are far from over. The International Energy Agency forecasts that even if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz gradually resumes, global oil supply will still fall by 3.9 million barrels per day in 2026.
