The global tanker market is experiencing an unprecedented freight-rate storm. The Iran conflict has reshaped Middle Eastern crude oil trade patterns, compounded by a severe shortage of vessel supply. Freight rates for Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) have surged to their highest level in sixty years—costing as much as $80 million to transport one cargo of crude oil from the U.S. to China, exceeding the launch cost of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. According to Bloomberg’s October 9 report, this week’s freight rate for a U.S.-originating tanker voyage translated to a transportation cost of $41 per barrel—up sharply from last year’s average of $4.50 per barrel on the same route. This cost accounts for roughly 45% of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures prices. Shipbroker Gibson noted that the voyage cost approximately $80 million—higher than SpaceX’s standard Falcon 9 launch price of about $74 million; earlier this year, that same amount would have been sufficient to purchase a VLCC outright. Shipbroker SSY stated that, even after inflation adjustment, current freight rates represent the highest since the advent of supertankers in the 1960s—surpassing even the ‘Tanker War’ period during the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s.

It has been 168 days since the Strait of Hormuz entered active conflict. Commercial traffic remains near zero, and war-risk insurance premiums still hover around thirty times normal levels. Yet the tanker market hasn’t collapsed—it has instead stabilized at historic highs. VLCC spot freight rates have remained persistently above six figures (USD per day), while Suezmax rates on certain routes have surged even higher; Aframax rates in the Caribbean, North Sea, and U.S. Gulf have all breached $100,000. Many refer to the current situation as the ‘second-best supercycle’—second only to the 2004–2008 period. But these two cycles bear little resemblance. Back then, growth was demand-driven: China was voraciously importing oil. This year, logic runs in reverse—cargo volumes are falling while freight rates rise, with both vessels and cargoes effectively stuck. I. Why do freight rates remain so high? Because ships are ‘trapped.’ Before reviewing the data, remember this key point: This tanker boom is not driven by excess cargo and insufficient tonnage—but rather by effective carrying capacity being artificially locked up. Global seaborne crude oil flows have declined by approximately 11% year-on-year; cargo volume carried by VLCCs has dropped nearly one-third. Yet VLCC Time Charter Equivalent (TCE) rates stand at $235,000 per day; Suezmax TCEs in the Atlantic have surged to $270,000; and Suezmaxes moving from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean briefly hit a record-high $440,000+. Cargo volumes are down—but freight rates are up. Why? Because of detours. Because of queues. Because fleet turnover efficiency has plummeted. Hundreds of tankers are stranded inside and outside the Gulf, forced to sail around the Cape of Good Hope or the Suez Canal—lengthening voyages and inflating ton-mile demand. Insurance costs, security premiums, and detour surcharges are all baked into freight rates. This differs fundamentally from traditional ‘demand-driven’ tanker booms. In those booms, freight rates collapse as soon as demand softens. This boom is ‘physically disruption-driven’: as long as the Strait of Hormuz remains in a state of ‘talk without resolution, fight without conclusion,’ freight rates will struggle to fall. Conversely, once the disruption ends, rates could decline far faster than in conventional cycles. II. China: From ‘largest buyer’ to ‘inventory buffer’ The most critical variable this round is neither Iran nor the U.S.—it’s China. In June, China’s crude oil imports fell to roughly 7.12 million barrels per day—the lowest since October 2016. Though July rebounded to around 8.45 million bpd (a three-month high), that figure remains well below both the 2025同期 level and the pre-war norm of 11–12 million bpd. Overall imports for the first half of the year declined by about 23% year-on-year. So why isn’t China buying? It’s not due to lack of demand—rather, China is using its domestic inventory as a safety cushion. Amid high oil prices and the Hormuz blockade, refiners prefer drawing down previously accumulated stocks rather than purchasing expensive cargoes at this juncture. The July rebound largely reflected the concentrated arrival of cargoes delayed during a brief window of temporary passage in June—not a genuine recovery in underlying demand. Imports may dip again in August. This has dual implications for the tanker market. In the short term, alternative supplies from the Atlantic Basin and West Africa—requiring longer voyages—provide continued support to freight rates. But medium-term risks loom—if China sustains low import levels, the ‘ceiling’ for global seaborne crude demand will be further lowered. For the past two decades, China has been the engine driving global seaborne crude demand. Now that engine is deliberately slowing down. High tanker freight rates are currently propped up by geopolitical premiums and detour-related costs—but if Chinese demand remains persistently weak, the double pressure of both easing geopolitical risk and sustained demand softness could hit simultaneously the moment the Strait of Hormuz fully reopens.
