Keys to Wells Fargo’s Small Business Lending Success Why did Wells Fargo’s small business lending business undergo such a dramatic transformation and rapid growth after 1994? We identify two key concepts: differentiated market positioning and standardization (or mass processing). The bank’s entire small business credit process was designed around these two pillars. First, regarding customer targeting and marketing, market research revealed that over 6.5 million U.S. firms—roughly 70% of all businesses—had annual sales under USD 2 million, indicating strong potential for small-loan services to small enterprises. Recognizing that these clients typically required modest loan amounts, short maturities, and were often owner-operated, Wells Fargo accurately classified over 90% of its small business credit offerings as a specialized sub-segment within personal lending. Through continuous testing and product innovation, the Business Direct program evolved into a mature system covering target-customer identification, marketing channels, and product-feature innovation—steadily enhancing Wells Fargo’s appeal to small business clients.
