Cross-industry collaboration: How to conduct cross-industry collaboration, examples of cross-industry collaboration, and the benefits and risks of cross-industry collaboration

How to use cross-industry collaboration to enhance brand awareness and engagement in digital marketing What is cross-industry collaboration? Cross-industry collaboration refers to cooperative initiatives between two or more brands or organizations from different sectors, industries, or product categories. By jointly launching new products, services, content, or campaigns, such collaborations enable resource sharing, complementary strengths, and value amplification—a strategic marketing approach. Cross-industry collaborations fall into two main types: Brand × Brand and Brand × Person. Brand × Brand: Collaboration between two or more brands with comparable or complementary brand recognition, target audiences, product benefits, brand philosophies, and reputations. Examples include Louis Vuitton × Supreme, Bright Dairy × Big White Rabbit, and RIO × Liu Shen Herbal Lotion. Brand × Person: Collaboration between a brand and a renowned artist, designer, celebrity, influencer, or blogger. Examples include Uniqlo × KAWS, Li-Ning × Jackie Chan, and MANNER Coffee × Helena Rubinstein. At its core, cross-industry collaboration leverages the 'chemical reaction' between distinct brands or individuals to generate buzz, spark consumer imagination and discussion, and thereby boost brand awareness and engagement. Why pursue cross-industry collaboration? Cross-industry collaboration helps brands achieve the following objectives: • Generate marketing buzz and elevate brand awareness. Through co-branded campaigns, brands can leverage each other’s visibility to create compelling narratives, amplify topic热度, attract traffic and attention, increase brand voice, and strengthen overall brand recognition². • Expand market share and drive sales conversion. Co-branded initiatives allow brands to integrate partner resources—such as distribution channels and user bases—to reach broader target audiences, enhancing mutual brand visibility and market share². Simultaneously, novel and engaging co-branded products or content stimulate consumers’ purchasing and sharing impulses, accelerating sales conversion. • Reinforce brand image and invigorate brand vitality. Through co-branding, brands can draw on their partners’ distinctive attributes and strengths to reinforce their own brand identity. Moreover, refreshed visual identities and narratives embodied in co-branded offerings inject new energy into the brand, differentiate it from competitors, and help establish a unique, personalized brand positioning. How to execute cross-industry collaboration effectively Successful cross-industry collaboration requires strategic and tactical planning. Key steps include: • Clarify objectives. To execute cross-industry collaboration effectively, brands must first define clear goals—determining whether the current initiative aims to elevate brand equity, improve brand image, or acquire users from new demographic segments. Different objectives dictate distinct collaboration approaches and success metrics. • Precise positioning. Prior to collaboration, brands must conduct precise positioning across three dimensions: their own brand, the prospective partner (brand or individual), and the target audience. Specifically, adherence to the following three principles is essential: — Precise complementarity: alignment in customer demographics, plus complementary resources and technical capabilities; — Convergence of brand philosophy and consumer needs: consistent brand tone to minimize perceived dissonance; — Attention-grabbing execution: packaging design and platform strategies must be deliberately crafted to capture consumer attention. • Selecting the right partner. What makes a brand or individual an ideal collaborator? At its heart, successful cross-industry collaboration embodies the principle of “harmony in diversity”: partners should possess comparable brand stature and overlapping target audiences, yet also offer a compelling element of contrast or novelty.

From Outsourcing to Growth Engine: Luxury Brands Are Redefining Partnerships

I. A shift confirmed by industry bodies In July 2026, the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) released an analysis stating that luxury groups are sharpening focus on core brands—a strategic recalibration that has opened new growth avenues for brand licensing. From Kering to LVMH, leading fashion conglomerates are optimizing brand portfolios and integrating licensing models into their core growth strategies. This assessment is not an isolated observation. In 2025, the world’s top 60 licensing agencies collectively generated $117.7 billion in retail sales of licensed consumer goods—a 12.7% year-on-year increase, the highest figure ever recorded by License Global. The global brand licensing market reached $377.3 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow to $401.5 billion in 2026, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.84%. The licensing industry is growing—but even more noteworthy is the structural transformation underway. II. Several landmark licensing deals In July 2026, Kering announced that its flagship brand Gucci had signed a 50-year exclusive beauty licensing agreement with L’Oréal Group. To terminate its existing contract with Coty ahead of schedule, Kering paid approximately $400 million in compensation. The new agreement is scheduled to take effect in mid-2027. In the same month, ownership of Marc Jacobs—a brand under LVMH—underwent a significant change. G-III Apparel Group entered into an agreement with WHP Global to acquire the brand; WHP will serve as the licensing agent, while G-III assumes operational responsibilities. G-III’s CEO explicitly stated plans to substantially expand Marc Jacobs beyond its traditional core categories of bags and accessories into ready-to-wear and other product lines, targeting long-term annual sales of $1 billion. These transactions share a defining trait: brand owners are no longer “offloading liabilities” but actively “selecting growth partners.” Gucci chose L’Oréal for its combined expertise in beauty R&D, global distribution networks, and localized operational experience. Marc Jacobs selected G-III for its proven capabilities in category expansion, procurement, scale-up operations, and worldwide distribution. What brands seek today are partners capable of enabling entry into new categories, new contexts, and new markets. III. The underlying logic behind the evolution of licensing models This transformation stems from structural shifts within the luxury market itself. Bain & Company’s “2025 China Personal Luxury Goods Market Report” indicates that China’s mainland personal luxury goods market contracted by 3–5% in 2025, though preliminary signs of recovery emerged starting in Q3.
