Cani’s gentle punch somehow blew up Trump.

Who, exactly, sabotaged the negotiations? We, of course, don’t know. Yet considering the Trump administration’s history over the past year and more—its capricious, ever-shifting stance in trade talks with multiple countries—Cani’s anger is entirely understandable. On August 22, Cani dropped a bombshell statement, declaring that Canada had been attacked and was now “at war.” He added that U.S. agreements were written in pencil—easily erased and rewritten at will. Shortly thereafter, Canada announced retaliatory measures: a newly enacted list of tariffs targeting roughly $20 billion worth of U.S. goods. Logically, given Canada’s unusually firm stance, the U.S. should have lowered its tone and sought to reassure its ally. Alas, it did not. In the following days, the U.S. government descended into a bizarre—and frankly, unintelligent—state. Trump himself, Treasury Secretary Bessent, and U.S. Trade Representative Grier began flooding social media with meme-style images, apparently hoping to belittle or humiliate Canada into accepting American demands. We have no idea where the U.S. government learned this kind of tantrum-like negotiation tactic. Bessent even likened Canada to a tiny dog yapping at a large dog—utterly disregarding Canada’s dignity as a sovereign nation. Unsurprisingly, this approach backfired spectacularly. Polling data shows Cani’s domestic approval rating surged dramatically; Canadians rallied behind their Prime Minister, resolved to fight the U.S. to the bitter end. Of course, they worry that the tariff war with the U.S. will drive up living costs—but still, over 85% of Canadians support the government’s decision to reject the trade agreement that had nearly been finalized with the U.S. As the saying goes, Canada today has launched a “people’s war” against the U.S.—a situation entirely engineered by the Trump administration. Now Trump threatens even harsher measures against Canada—but beyond further escalating tensions, such threats are almost certain to yield no meaningful results. Trump seems not to grasp that today’s world order is no longer one where America calls all the shots. As Cani put it plainly: the old order is dead—and it will never return.

Has the U.S.-Canada tariff war taken a dramatic turn? Canada holds ‘three trump cards’—so who’s really afraid of whom?

The third trump card: cutting off the supply of grain—i.e., fertilizer. This is the most lethal one. Nearly 80% of the potash fertilizer used by American farmers comes from Canada; Saskatchewan alone accounts for 87% of U.S. potash imports. Potash is the lifeblood of fertilizer; fertilizer is the lifeblood of food production. Ford stated bluntly: cut off potash supplies, and U.S. agriculture would collapse overnight. Reuters dubbed potash Canada’s 'nuclear option.' Russia and Belarus also produce potash—but the U.S. has long placed both countries on its sanctions list. So who, exactly, can the U.S. turn to fill this gap? That’s the puzzle: how did a country that has played the role of the 'quiet, dependable neighbor' for over a century suddenly flip the table? Many view this confrontation as a momentary outburst by Canada—but it isn’t. Before acting, Cani had weighed every possible scenario a thousand times—and concluded there truly was no way back. Let’s first examine Trump’s demands. This round isn’t about money anymore. He’s demanding Canada grant the U.S. exclusive rights to critical minerals—and require Canada to seek Washington’s approval before conducting trade with any third country. Even more alarming, he wants to eliminate protections for the French language and bilingual signage in Canada—a constitutional red line in Quebec. Cani put it plainly: to Americans, French may be an annoyance—but in Canada, it’s a fundamental right. Trump’s move amounts to driving a knife straight into the heart of Canadian sovereignty. When a neighbor starts dictating how you speak at home and whom you’re allowed to befriend, the issue is no longer tariffs—it’s whether you remain an independent nation at all. Don’t forget: in recent years, the notion that 'Canada is the 51st U.S. state' has circulated widely. What Cani is defending here isn’t just economic interests—it’s sovereignty itself, and national dignity. Then consider the timing. The U.S. midterm elections fall on November 3. Trump’s approval rating has already plummeted to 33%, his lowest ever for a second-term president—and inflation remains his greatest political vulnerability. He desperately needs a flashy 'I won big!' achievement to boost his record—and Canada has become the sacrificial pawn. Thus, this tariff war has never been about economics; it’s purely political. If Canada continues to yield, it risks losing sovereignty altogether. So when patience runs out, there’s no need to endure further. For example, on March 2025—the very day new U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs took effect—Canada immediately announced equivalent countermeasures. Ontario even imposed a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, forcing Trump to pause negotiations before rescinding the fee. For decades, Canada’s concessions have only earned it jokes about being the '51st state'—and the fact that 94% of its auto exports go to the U.S., yet it remains perpetually pressured and manipulated. Cani has now realized the truth: concession has no endpoint—today it’s critical minerals, tomorrow tariffs, and the day after, national dignity. Better to stand and fight than kneel and survive. Of course, there’s another structural factor—one many overlook: in this showdown, America’s dependence on Canada runs far deeper than Canada’s dependence on America. On paper, Canada relies on the U.S. for 75% of its exports—meaning the U.S. suffers only 'localized pain.' But flip the ledger: 63.4% of U.S. crude oil imports, nearly 100% of its natural gas imports, over 80% of its electricity imports, and over 80% of its potash imports—all come exclusively from Canada.
