Estée Lauder: Architect of a Beauty Empire

French perfumes—such as Chanel No. 5 and Joy by Jean Patou—are luxury goods. They are expensive. They are reserved for special occasions. An average American woman might buy perfume only once a year—or perhaps not at all. Estée Lauder saw an opportunity. What if she could create a fragrance that was less expensive, suitable for daily use, and didn’t require a special occasion? She could unlock an entirely new market. In 1953, Estée Lauder launched Youth-Dew. What was Youth-Dew? It was a scented bath oil. You could pour it into your bathtub while bathing, enveloping your entire body in fragrance—or apply it directly to your skin as a perfume. It was revolutionary for three reasons: First, a pricing revolution. Youth-Dew cost about the same as a bath oil but functioned as a perfume—affordable for the average woman. Second, a usage-revolution. French perfumes were applied with “dots”—a dab on the wrist, a dab behind the ear. Youth-Dew was about “soaking”—immersing yourself in scent. It offered an entirely new sensory experience. Third, a positioning revolution. Youth-Dew wasn’t “expensive French perfume.” It was “every woman’s affordable beauty secret.” What happened after Youth-Dew launched? According to Estée Lauder Company’s historical records, the product propelled the company’s sales from $850,000 in 1958 to $100 million in 1973. But Youth-Dew had a secret—one Estée Lauder never mentioned in her autobiography. That secret concerned who actually created the product. According to Lee Israel’s biography, Youth-Dew was not developed by Estée Lauder herself. It was created by a perfumer at International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). IFF’s predecessor was van Ameringen-Haebler, Inc., founded by Arnold Lewis van Ameringen—a close friend of Estée Lauder. Lee Israel writes in her biography that Youth-Dew was a gift from van Ameringen to Estée Lauder—accompanied by extended credit terms, a form of financial support she could not obtain elsewhere at the time. Who was the perfumer? According to available sources, it may have been Ernest Shiftan, then chief perfumer at Ameringen-Haebler. Other accounts link Youth-Dew to perfumer Josephine Catapano. But the truth remains: this is a corporate secret jointly held by IFF and The Estée Lauder Companies. In her autobiography, Estée Lauder credited herself exclusively for Youth-Dew’s success.
