Strong alliance! Norway’s three energy giants join forces to explore the Norwegian Continental Shelf

Equinor, Aker BP, and Vår Energi—the three major Norwegian oil and gas companies—have formally established a strategic exploration alliance. Moving beyond the immediate vicinity of existing infrastructure, they are pooling capital and expertise to pursue the few remaining large-scale exploration opportunities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Recent discoveries have largely clustered around existing infrastructure. Although ‘near-field exploration’ remains a top priority, developing entirely new, standalone oil and gas fields requires securing significantly larger resource volumes. Yet the few remaining ‘large-scale’ prospects on the shelf often entail higher geological uncertainty, greater engineering complexity, and substantially larger capital requirements. Going it alone makes such risks difficult to bear; by sharing risk and complementing capabilities, the three companies can evaluate far more exploration targets than they could individually. This collaboration is not merely a commercial consolidation—it is a direct response to an imminent production anxiety. Equinor previously warned that, without new major discoveries, production from the Norwegian Continental Shelf will begin declining after 2035. As Europe’s current most critical natural gas supplier, Norway must secure new reserves to fill future capacity gaps.

Aker BP commences production at the Hanz field in Norway’s sector of the North Sea

Aker BP has commenced production at the Hanz field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, showcasing the reuse of existing oil and gas production infrastructure. According to Aker BP, this subsea development project carries an estimated investment of nearly NOK 5 billion (USD 457.7 million) and holds approximately 20 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe); Aker BP holds a 35% stake in the field. Discovered in 1997, Hanz forms part of the Ivar Aasen field development plan, located 12 km (7.5 miles) to the south. In a press release, Aker BP stated: “Following delivery of the development and operations plan for the Ivar Aasen area—including the Hanz development—this project completes an optimized development solution through the reuse of the Jette field’s subsea production system. This marks the first time production equipment has been reused for a new field development on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Furthermore, the strategy for producing oil and gas has evolved, including the adoption of cross-flow well water injection. This approach significantly reduces power consumption, chemical usage, and the number of subsea installations.” The Ivar Aasen field was discovered in 2008 in the northern North Sea and began production in December 2016. According to the Norwegian government website Norskpetroleum.no, its remaining reserves stand at 8 million standard cubic meters (282.5 million cubic feet) of oil equivalent. Aker BP, holding a 36.2% interest, serves as operator. Other partners include Equinor Energy AS (41.47%), Sval Energi AS (12.3%), OKEA ASA (9.2%), and M Vest Energy AS (0.8%). In the Hanz field, the other joint venture partners are Equinor (50%) and Sval (15%). Aker BP expects to bring online another infill well connected to the Alveheim field platform next month, as announced separately alongside its Q1 2024 financial results. Additionally, Tyrving—a field operated by Aker BP—is scheduled to commence production in the fourth quarter, aligning with its originally planned 2025 startup timeline.
