Did Ukrainian forces launch a surprise strike on Siberia, paralyzing a Russian oil refinery?

Ukraine’s long-range strike units have once again shattered perceptions—bringing the war directly to Siberia and even farther east, into Russia’s Far East region beyond Vladivostok. For years, the Kremlin believed that relocating heavy industry and petrochemical facilities deep into Siberia east of the Ural Mountains would place them safely beyond the reach of conflict—guaranteeing peace of mind. Yet Ukrainian drones have completely shattered this illusion of security! On August 10, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces launched a cross-border, long-range aerial strike targeting the ‘West Siberian Petrochemical Complex’—a facility operated by Russia’s petrochemical giant SIBUR. This is Russia’s largest petrochemical plant and the very lifeline of the nation’s industrial raw materials and plastic production. Ukrainian drones traversed over 2,000 kilometers—striking with pinpoint accuracy the complex’s central gas fractionation unit. Massive fires erupted on-site, sending thick, black smoke billowing skyward. Though the local governor downplayed the incident as merely a ‘fire,’ Ukraine’s General Staff has confirmed it was a deliberate Ukrainian strike that severely damaged the petrochemical hub—not only disrupting oil refining but sending shockwaves across Russia’s entire petrochemical supply chain. Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces also struck a refinery in Lower Tatarstan—the key asset of Tatneft, with an annual refining capacity of 13 million tons. Back-to-back explosions at both sites signal that Ukrainian drones have now penetrated deep into Russia’s heartland with near-impunity. If the 2,000-kilometer strike on Siberia was already shocking, the fire that recently broke out in Russia’s Far East is even more chilling. The Komsomolsk-on-Amur Refinery—owned by Rosneft and located just across the Heilongjiang Province border in China—lies farther east than Northeast China itself. A major fire recently erupted there. This Far Eastern petrochemical stronghold, designed to process 8.5 million tons of crude oil annually, was simultaneously burning fiercely at three separate locations. The blaze occurred a staggering ~6,500 kilometers from Ukraine’s front lines! Although the official cause remains unconfirmed, whether it resulted from Ukrainian long-range precision strikes or sabotage by special operations teams, it marks a systemic crisis for Russia’s energy logistics infrastructure. Even countries openly supporting Russia—like North Korea—and those covertly aiding Moscow are now within Ukraine’s operational reach. Ukraine’s 1st Independent Unmanned Systems Center recently revealed stunning figures in an interview: since early 2026, Ukrainian strikes against targets deep inside Russia have surged by 1,150%; in the first half of 2026 alone, Ukrainian forces precisely hit 697 targets inside Russia; most critically, a record-breaking 43% of Russia’s total refining capacity has now been paralyzed. Meanwhile, as energy arteries in the rear are severed, new waves of strikes against Russian logistics networks continue unabated. Today, August 11, the ‘Wildberries’ logistics center warehouse in Voronezh Oblast—fully commissioned only last November—was struck. Spanning over 150,000 square meters, it could store more than 90 million items. Statistics show that among the 15 massive terminals in this Russian ‘Taobao-style’ logistics network, only six remain undamaged.

Will the drone warfare on the Russia-Ukraine battlefield influence the global order?

The UK ranks third with $16.4 billion. Denmark ranks fourth with $11.4 billion. (I used to assume Denmark would rank no higher than eighth or ninth—but it has actually broken into the top four.) France—the former ‘Gaulish Rooster’—ranks eighth with just $7 billion. Italy ranks thirteenth, providing $2.017 billion in military aid. Below that, figures drop to just several hundred million dollars each. All military aid received by Ukraine totals just over $180 billion—this figure covers assistance up to December 31, 2025. From February 2022 through the end of 2025, the total never exceeded $190 billion. Trump has now been in office for nearly a year and a half—and has provided Ukraine with only $1.2 billion. Facing severe fiscal constraints for waging war, Ukraine has decided to globally proliferate its drone technology: ‘Pay, and you can buy.’ Ukraine’s Foreign Minister is scheduled to visit China—and he’ll offer the technology there too, provided sufficient hard currency is paid. Yet he has already sold this technology to at least ten countries—meaning it’s no longer exclusive. When everyone possesses the same technology, it effectively becomes ubiquitous—and thus strategically neutralized. Japan can afford it; Taiwan can afford it—so naturally, sales will extend there too. Here’s $100 from Japan; here’s $100 from the UAE—what real difference does that make? Once I’ve sold the technology to the UAE, Jordan, Japan, and the UK, any future conflict involving them becomes none of my concern. A curious question arises: What if Taiwan acquires Ukrainian drone technology? Suppose Taiwan achieves Ukrainian-level drone production capacity—and gains Starlink support from Elon Musk. That would pose a grave threat to China’s coastal and inland energy infrastructure. On July 6, 2026, a Ukrainian long-range drone traveled 2,500 kilometers to strike the Omsk Refinery in West Siberia—the largest refinery in Russia, accounting for 10% of national refined fuel output and serving as a critical logistical hub for Russian military fuel supplies. It marked the deepest strike conducted by Ukrainian forces since the war began. A single drone cost only $50,000—flying all the way from Ukraine to the Kazakh border to destroy that refinery. Even deploying 100 such drones would cost just $5 million. And these are drones capable of flying thousands of kilometers; those with ranges of only several hundred kilometers are far cheaper. Russia typically deploys extremely expensive air-defense systems to counter them. Even if a drone is shot down, the cost disparity between offense and defense remains narrow—or may even favor Ukraine. If interception fails, one fuel tank alone represents enormous value. Assume Taiwan’s drones match Ukrainian capability: they’d need only fly several hundred kilometers—since most of China’s refineries lie along the coast. Take Pengzhou Petrochemical, one of Southwest China’s largest refineries—1,800 kilometers from Taipei. From Taipei to Zhangye in China’s Hexi Corridor is roughly 2,500 kilometers. Theoretically, drones launched from Taiwan could reach refineries in Gansu—if air defenses prove inadequate. Of course, if China’s air-defense capabilities are sufficiently robust, such threats would be neutralized—especially along the southeastern coast, where every incoming drone would be intercepted. Barring an amphibious invasion of Taiwan, the final scenario may simply be mutual drone exchanges—each side testing whose drone force proves superior.
