“Turnaround” or “Capsizing”? Sany Heavy Energy’s Major Upheaval

Meanwhile, gross margins from overseas operations are significantly higher than those from domestic operations, serving as a crucial profit buffer. At the product level, 10MW-class onshore large-megawatt wind turbines have entered mass production; ultra-high-altitude turbine models have completed their technical closed-loop development; and offshore wind turbines have achieved their first project-level commercial breakthrough. Third-party operational data show that Sany Heavy Energy’s turbine availability ranks among the industry’s top tier—validating product reliability in the market. Corresponding to this is an upgrade in strategic narrative. In its semi-annual report, Sany Heavy Energy revised its vision—from “driving humanity’s efficient use of clean energy” to “becoming a global leader in green energy solutions.” The emphasis has shifted from equipment manufacturing toward integrated solution provision—a shift echoed by new business initiatives such as overseas EPC capability building and direct green-power interconnection. Yet beneath the scale lies undeniable concern. The first challenge stems from cash flow: the company’s net operating cash flow remained negative throughout the reporting period. The company attributes this primarily to rapid expansion—increased inventory buildup and concentrated upstream procurement payments—as well as the fact that proceeds from power plant sales were recorded under financing cash flows rather than operating cash flows. As a capital-intensive industry, wind turbine OEMs rely critically on healthy cash flow for corporate stability. The more orders secured, the greater the working capital tied up in raw material procurement. Balancing massive order fulfillment against persistent outflows in operating cash remains a key managerial challenge. Moreover, although revenue continues to grow, low-price orders signed during the intense price-war period remain in active delivery—continuously suppressing overall turbine gross margin. Rapid revenue growth has yet to fully translate into tangible net profit returns. While the wind turbine OEM sector has emerged from its most brutal phase of cutthroat price competition, digestion of legacy low-margin orders still requires time. Additionally, Sany Heavy Energy’s absolute R&D expenditure has declined year-on-year. In H1 2023: ¥433 million; H1 2024: ¥373 million; H1 2025: ¥368 million; and H1 2026: ¥329 million. The company explains this not as R&D reduction but as a pursuit of “higher-quality, more efficient R&D”—optimizing project portfolios and improving ROI. Objectively, declining absolute R&D spending does not necessarily equate to weakened R&D capability. During the reporting period, Sany Heavy Energy maintained 861 R&D personnel, with numerous ongoing projects—including offshore turbine models, overseas-customized units, and high-altitude turbines. However, given intensifying competition in offshore wind, grid-forming turbines, and large-megawatt platforms—and amid falling absolute R&D expenditure—the pace of technological iteration may face mounting pressure. 02 Sany at a Crossroads Furthermore, Yu Liangwei’s sudden departure sent ripples across China’s wind power industry. A veteran within the Sany system, Yu personally oversaw Sany Heavy Energy’s founding, breakout, and IPO journey. He spearheaded customer acquisition, tendering, and marketing system construction—playing a pivotal role in Sany Heavy Energy’s early conquest of China’s large-scale base markets. Born out of Sany Group, Sany Heavy Energy inherited the manufacturing DNA forged by “Old Sany” during the infrastructure expansion era. Under Liang Wengen’s leadership, Sany’s corporate culture was defined by “intolerance of slowness”: strict morning meetings, zero-delay execution, aggressive marketing, and rapid territorial expansion. The “price butcher” approach epitomized the Liang Wengen era. At that time, Sany Heavy Energy seized the “last train” of China’s 2019 wind power subsidy policy—and leveraged Old Sany’s rigorous cost-control discipline to become one of the biggest beneficiaries of the ensuing “rush-installation” boom.

Clear inflection point in performance: Q4 sequential growth of 366%, outperforming peers; PE valuation of 15x for this year

Globally, wind power will likewise sustain steady growth. According to Wood Mackenzie’s “Q2 2024 Global Wind Power Market Outlook,” total global wind power capacity additions over the next decade (2024–2033) are projected to reach 1,763 GW—of which China will account for 915 GW, remaining the world’s largest wind market. North America and Asia-Pacific (excluding mainland China) are expected to add 180 GW and 162 GW respectively. IV. Business and Products Founded in 2008, Sany Heavy Energy is the professional wind power subsidiary of Sany Group and a listed company. According to the China Wind Energy Association’s (CWEA) “2024 China Wind Power Installation Capacity Statistical Bulletin,” the company installed 9.15 GW of new wind turbines in 2024—a 23% YoY increase—and held approximately 10.5% domestic market share. From 2018 to 2023, its onshore wind market share surged from 1.3% to 10%, while its industry ranking climbed from 14th to 4th—elevating it to a top-tier player. Notably, Sany Heavy Energy’s total onshore wind bidding volume in 2024 reached 12,935.7 MW, with an average winning bid price (including tower sections) of ¥1,931/kW—translating to roughly ¥25 billion in onshore wind order value alone. Business Structure The company’s core businesses focus on wind turbine products and O&M services, and new-energy power plants. Wind turbine revenue accounts for 80–90% of total revenue—making it the company’s primary revenue driver. Per its 2024 semi-annual report, Sany Heavy Energy’s intelligent onshore wind turbine portfolio covers 3.X MW to 11 MW, with rotor diameters reaching up to 230 meters; its offshore turbine range spans 8 MW to 16 MW. Its 15 MW onshore turbine has completed technical development and prototype assembly, while offshore model expansion is underway. Larger turbines represent a major industry trend—not only raising technical barriers but also delivering higher added value and improved profitability for manufacturers. Sany Heavy Energy’s superior profitability relative to peers stems partly from its strategy of in-house manufacturing of key components—especially blades and generators. Blades constitute ~24% of total turbine cost—the highest single component expense—while generator quality directly impacts turbine operational stability. Vertical integration of core components reduces costs and enhances quality control. Offshore Wind Breakthrough Sany Heavy Energy had been the sole member among China’s “Top Five” wind turbine OEMs never to secure an offshore turbine procurement contract—until this year. Recently, the company won the Jieyang Shibei Mountain Wind Farm project awarded by Guangdong Energy Group, comprising 14 units of 13.6 MW and one unit of 10 MW offshore turbines. This marks Sany Heavy Energy’s first batch-commercial offshore order in the large-megawatt era—and signals its official entry into the offshore wind market. Overseas Market Expansion Over the past two years, the company has accelerated overseas expansion, assembling a marketing team exceeding 200 people and prioritizing markets across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. It has successfully secured multiple projects in India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. In 2024, Sany Heavy Energy accelerated overseas production capacity construction—expanding its Indian factory while breaking ground on its Kazakhstan facility in November 2024, scheduled for completion by end-2025.
