As a premier technical conference in the global open-computing arena, the OCP Summit will once again bring together enterprises across the server, data center, power delivery, liquid cooling, and networking supply chains. Higher rack power densities, more advanced cooling solutions, and larger-scale GPU clusters will remain focal points for the industry. Yet for enterprises currently building AI data centers, a more pragmatic question than technical specifications is: When will these systems and equipment actually go live? Suppose an AI data center is planned for 100MW of electrical capacity, its liquid-cooling systems meet performance requirements, and GPU servers are even already installed and powered on. Does this mean the project is fully delivered? Not necessarily. Because bridging the gap between planned capacity and actual usable compute involves multiple critical steps—including grid interconnection, system integration, equipment commissioning, and customer acceptance. Ahead of the 2026 OCP Summit, three questions merit close attention from equipment vendors, procurement teams, and data center developers: From 100MW on Paper to Actual Power Delivery: How Many Steps Remain? Large AI data centers frequently announce construction plans specifying tens—or even hundreds—of megawatts. But planning for 100MW does not equate to having 100MW of usable power available today. This 100MW figure serves only as a hypothetical example—not data from any specific project. In practice, planned capacity, grid interconnection arrangements, facility energization, and formal operation of computing equipment represent distinct phases. For instance, a data center developer may have secured land and completed preliminary engineering designs—but grid interconnection conditions may still be pending final approval. Even with signed interconnection agreements or permits in hand, external transmission lines, substations, and internal power distribution systems may still require construction. And even once the facility reaches energization readiness, it does not automatically follow that all GPU servers have been installed. Thus, assessing whether an AI data center truly possesses power-delivery capability requires looking beyond the planned capacity—to understand the actual progress of power infrastructure development. For procurement teams, several key questions must be confirmed: Has the grid interconnection arrangement been finalized? Are relevant agreements or permits complete? What is the current status of external grid infrastructure and internal power-distribution construction? When is full power delivery expected—the point at which computing equipment can begin stable operation? These questions must be evaluated within the context of each country’s or region’s specific grid interconnection regulations; no universal documentation or approval process exists globally. For phased-construction data centers, further clarification is needed on how much actual usable capacity each phase delivers. For example, if a campus planned for 100MW delivers only 20MW in Phase I, GPU deployments in that phase must align strictly with that constraint. Server procurement and delivery schedules must also be synchronized accordingly. If GPU servers arrive before the data center is ready to accept power, additional costs may accrue—including warehousing, reinstallation adjustments, and project delays. For AI data centers, what truly matters is not how many MW are planned—but rather, how much power will be reliably available, under clearly defined timelines and conditions, in the next phase.
