The U.S.-Canada trade negotiations collapsed at the last minute; the U.S. will impose a 50% tariff on Canadian goods, and Canada will retaliate with equivalent tariffs—what impacts will this have?

The 'Dongzi' figure began targeting Canada immediately after his election victory, repeatedly proposing publicly that Canada should join the United States as its '51st state'. A major reason Dongzi is so focused on Canada lies in the oil-and-gas interest groups backing the Republican Party, which seek to continue 'exclusively enjoying' Canada’s oil and gas resources. Canada possesses abundant oil and natural gas reserves—but for a long time, its oil and gas exports relied almost entirely on the U.S. market. In 2023, 92% of Canada’s crude oil exports and nearly 100% of its natural gas exports went solely to the United States. Such extreme dependence on a single buyer naturally suppresses pricing power: Canadian crude consistently trades at a steep discount relative to U.S. benchmarks—sometimes as much as $50 per barrel cheaper. While higher refining costs for Canadian oil partly explain this gap, overreliance on the U.S. market remains the fundamental reason Canadian hydrocarbons fail to command competitive prices. Thus, since the era of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ('Little Potato'), Canada has actively pursued East Asia—the world’s largest oil-and-gas importer—to diversify its export markets. In 2018, the Canadian government announced a C$35 billion (approx. US$26 billion) investment to build the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Project—a pipeline linking Alberta’s oil fields to ports near Vancouver on the Pacific coast. This project was completed last June, tripling Canada’s oil export capacity to Asia. And this is only the beginning: numerous Canadian oil-and-gas terminal facilities are currently under construction. To U.S. energy interests, however, Canada’s pivot appears nothing short of treasonous—akin to a 'stepdaughter' seeking new 'stepfathers' beyond her original patron. The primary reason behind the recent collapse of U.S.-Canada trade talks, according to Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem (referred to here as 'Kani'), was that 'the U.S. attempted, at the eleventh hour, to restrict Canada’s future ability to sign trade agreements with other countries.' In essence, Dongzi sought to prevent Canada from selling oil and gas directly to third countries—bypassing the United States altogether. 2. Why is Kani taking such a firm stance this time Although Kani previously issued strong warnings toward the U.S.—such as declaring in a speech at the University of Ottawa last year that 'the decades-long trend of ever-deepening economic integration between Canada and the U.S. has ended,' and that 'many advantages we once derived from our close relationship with the U.S. have now become vulnerabilities'—

The empire’s one-two punch has only just begun—the oil move is the second punch.

Regarding crude oil: 1) The Treasury Secretary is directing a group of 'countries' to impose economic sanctions on Iran—but this tactic has already been deployed repeatedly against Russia for years. Has it worked? 2) Perhaps naval mines in the Middle East have been cleared; perhaps several additional tankers’ worth of crude have been shipped out—but these measures likely won’t resolve the underlying structural problems. 3) The Empire and Canada remain locked in a tariff war—yet they’ve avoided touching Canada’s oil-sands heavy crude altogether... 4) Diesel and other refined products remain in short supply; the near-month crude price continues to drag the far-month price upward—a pattern unchanged. (As of August 27, 2026: crude plunged sharply, then rebounded modestly.) Therefore, stay steady: if the Empire intends to drive crude down to $40/barrel, it may deploy even more aggressive measures—but until then, there’s no need to rush around. Crude oil may well be the Empire’s 'second punch' in a broader strategic combo—the first punch has barely landed, and the full scope of the Empire’s intentions remains far from revealed.
