North America’s Electricity Shortage Crisis Is Acute Over the past eleven years, global grid investment has steadily increased, growing at an average annual rate of 2.5%—rising from under $300 billion in 2013 to nearly $390 billion in 2024. In 2025, this figure is projected to surpass $400 billion for the first time. To meet the long-term net-zero emissions target by 2050, smart grid investment must double by 2030. Additionally, the U.S. grid suffers from severe ‘vascular aging’: vast portions of its transmission infrastructure have operated for decades and can no longer handle surging electricity demand. The rapid rollout of data centers—and the electrification of transportation and heating—further strain the grid. Connecting new generation sources to the grid is exceptionally difficult: permitting and constructing a high-voltage transmission line takes 8–12 years—far too long to address near-term shortages. The most critical bottleneck lies in transformers—the ‘pacemakers’ of the grid.
