China's first domestically approved, homegrown ECMO emerges!

According to available information, Vitasprings® is the first domestically developed, highly integrated ECMO product. Mimicking the gas exchange mechanism of the human lung, it features an innovative spiral-flow guidance and secondary flow-splitting structure, combined with a vortex-type air-venting design—making it more compatible with hemodynamic principles and reducing damage to blood cells. Public sources indicate that Kewei Medical launched a prospective, multicenter, randomized, single-blind, positive parallel-controlled clinical trial for Vitasprings® in August 2020, completing enrollment of all patients by the end of January 2021. This clinical trial was led by Beijing Anzhen Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, with participation from Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital, West China Hospital of Sichuan University, and Tianjin Chest Hospital. During the trial, Vitasprings® demonstrated performance comparable to internationally leading products; its advantages—including low priming volume, low transmembrane pressure gradient, and operational convenience—received full recognition from clinical experts. It is reported that MicroPort Medical acquired Sorin in late 2017 jointly with Yunfeng Fund for HK$1.5 billion. MicroPort and Yunfeng held respective equity stakes of 75% and 25%. In October 2021, MicroPort acquired German company Hemovent GmbH (“Hemovent”) in its entirety for up to €123 million (approximately RMB 923 million). Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Aachen, Germany, Hemovent is a medical device company specializing in innovative extracorporeal life support systems. Its flagship product is the ECMO system MOBYBOX®, which has obtained CE marking—the world’s first ECMO system integrating the blood pump and oxygenator into a single unit. Unlike conventional ECMO devices, Hemovent’s MOBYBOX® System is portable: powered solely by gas drive—without motors or external power supply—and weighing under 2 kg, it can be carried freely in a backpack. Consequently, its application scenarios extend beyond intensive care units (ICUs) to intra- and inter-hospital transport as well as field rescue operations—enabling more critically ill patients to receive extracorporeal life support immediately. Following this acquisition, MicroPort may become the first domestic enterprise capable of manufacturing complete ECMO systems. In addition to external acquisitions, MicroPort has also pursued ECMO localization through independent R&D. According to MicroPort’s 2021 semi-annual report, its next-generation membrane oxygenator successfully completed clinical enrollment, with favorable clinical feedback; the full ECMO system remains in the design verification stage. 03. The Challenging Path Toward Domestic ECMO Production A research report by Huaxi Securities estimates that, assuming 1,442 Class-III Grade-A hospitals and 50,000 ICU beds nationwide, the annual domestic ECMO market would reach approximately RMB 1.8 billion once all such hospitals are equipped with ECMO devices. However, the Chinese ECMO market is currently dominated by international brands—including the world’s top three suppliers: Maquet (≈70% market share), Medtronic (≈10%), and Sorin (≈10%).
