If the thesis hasn’t progressed meaningfully toward your expectation within N months, cut the position in half. Time itself is a cost—both the opportunity cost of capital tied up, and the cost of holding a ‘zombie position’ that blinds you to new opportunities—often far exceeding any paper loss. V. A Set of Rules You Can Tape to Your Wall 1. Write It Down Before You Buy. Before entering, write three lines: your quantifiable rationale for holding, your falsification condition, and your time budget. If you can’t write them, don’t buy. 2. Size First, Then Enter. Calculate position size upfront—and cap it at the fractional Kelly criterion. 3. Total Position Size Automatically Adjusts with Volatility & Drawdown. No exceptions allowed for ‘this time is different.’ 4. Add Only to Profiting Positions—Never to Losing Ones. Pyramid upward—not downward. 5. Only Use ‘Profits’ to ‘Hold for Bigger Moves’—Never ‘Principal.’ Only after recovering your initial risk may the remaining position be managed with looser profit-taking rules to capture extended trends. 6. Exit Immediately Upon Falsification—Price Irrelevant. Holding on after fundamentals break down, hoping for a rebound, is the most common cause of death for subjective traders. VI. Final Thoughts If the observation ‘most account returns come from a few big winners’ holds true, then the optimal way for a subjective trader to operate is surprisingly simple: — Fully deploy capital when market odds are favorable (to earn ); — Concentrate positions boldly when additional, verifiable catalysts emerge (to earn ); — Otherwise, maintain small, nimble positions—and calmly accept that most of the time, you won’t outperform. What truly distinguishes outstanding subjective traders isn’t how often they’re right—but how they behave when wrong: — Small positions and fast exits when wrong; — Large positions and patient holding when right. At its core, position sizing and exit rules transform the uncontrollable variable—‘predictive ability’—into the controllable variable—‘risk budget.’

These assets won’t make you rich overnight—but the probability of suffering large losses is low. 3. Free Access to IPO Subscription. In A-share markets, IPO subscription eligibility depends on account market value. Your core position doubles as your subscription ‘ticket’—simply hold it steady, and you’ll receive free lottery-style subscription numbers year after year. When the broad market drops 30%, a high-dividend portfolio may decline only ~10%—and continues paying dividends. This ‘slower decline’ confers enormous psychological advantage in bear markets—you won’t be forced into panicked decisions at the worst possible moment. Core-position discipline is singular: ‘Don’t touch it unless necessary.’ No switching due to quarterly fluctuations; no envy-driven selling just because neighboring tech stocks surged. The only valid sell triggers are: (a) extreme overvaluation (e.g., bank P/B rising above 1.5x, or dividend yield falling below 2%), or (b) genuine deterioration in company fundamentals—verified using my earlier ‘Three Questions for Stuck Positions.’ Layer Two: Satellite Position — 30% — Hedging, Growth, and Long-Term Winners, Allocated 10% Each The satellite portfolio’s purpose isn’t income—it’s ensuring your overall portfolio doesn’t ‘fail a subject.’ Each 10% serves a distinct function: Gold & Base Metals — 10%: Buying Insurance, Not Returns. Gold generates no earnings and historically underperforms quality equities over the long term—but it hedges against another class of risks: fiat currency debasement, geopolitical conflict, and declining real interest rates. Years when both equities and bonds collapse—‘dual drawdowns’—are often precisely when gold rallies. Holding 10% ensures that, in extreme scenarios, at least one asset in your portfolio turns red. For base metals, I allocate to integrated leaders like Zijin Mining—copper-and-gold dual-business models—not pure gold miners. Copper enjoys industrial demand support; gold provides financial attributes. Dual drivers enhance robustness. But remember: base metals are highly cyclical. Buy according to the cycle—refer to my earlier PE/PB framework—monitor when the sector is quiet and P/B is low; never chase momentum during peak profitability and euphoric valuations. Technology — 10%: Index-Only, No Stock-Picking. Technology offers the highest long-term growth potential—but also the highest individual-stock mortality rate: rapid technological obsolescence, shifting competitive landscapes every few years. Hitting the right stock is luck; missing is the norm. So I avoid stock selection entirely—instead buying ChiNext or STAR 50 ETFs. Indices self-renew: weak firms get delisted; strong ones get added. The index lives forever.
