This asset allocation, in essence, is a bet on the electrified future—copper forms the skeleton of power grids, while cobalt and nickel lie at the heart of batteries; Glencore’s investment portfolio thus resonates deeply with the overarching energy transition trend. In the energy segment, coal occupies a contradictory and complex role. Glencore owns coal assets in Australia, South Africa, and Colombia, and ranks as the world’s largest seaborne coal trader. Although the company pledged in 2019 to gradually curtail coal production and shift toward low-carbon operations, reality remains awkward: the 2022 energy crisis propelled coal profitability to an all-time high, and in H1 2026, coal business earnings surged 35% year-on-year to USD 2.4 billion.
