Capable Analyst Commentary: Colombia’s Presidential Election Results Already Reflect the Direction of Geopolitical Development

On June 21, 2026, Colombia held the second round of its presidential election. Preliminary vote counts show that Abelardo de la Espriella (also transliterated as Abelardo de la Espriella), candidate of the far-right 'Defenders of the Fatherland' movement (Defensores de la Patria / Movimiento Defensores de la Patria), narrowly defeated Iván Cepeda, candidate of the left-wing 'Historic Pact' coalition (Pacto Histórico), with approximately 49.7% to 48.6%. De la Espriella is thus elected President of Colombia for the 2026–2030 term and is expected to be inaugurated on August 7, 2026. I. Background of the Winning Candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, aged 47, is a criminal defense lawyer holding dual Colombian and U.S. citizenship. A political newcomer, he received explicit public endorsement from former U.S. President Donald Trump and champions a platform centered on 'tough-on-crime governance,' small government, and pro-U.S. alignment. II. Key Policy Priorities Security and Public Order: Advocates a 'strong-arm policy' (Mano Dura), restoring full law-enforcement authority to military and police forces; terminating ceasefire negotiations with anti-government armed groups such as the ELN; launching military operations against drug cartels and organized crime syndicates; and constructing ten new large-scale prisons. Economic Policy: Significantly cutting government administrative expenditures and civil service positions; lowering corporate tax rates to attract foreign investment; resuming oil and natural gas exploration, extraction, and hydraulic fracturing (reversing Petro’s green-energy ban); and encouraging private investment in agriculture and livestock farming. Foreign Policy: Explicitly prioritizes repairing relations with the United States—deepening cooperation on counternarcotics and defense, as well as intelligence sharing; adopts a hardline critical stance toward Venezuela’s Maduro government; and does not identify China as an independent diplomatic priority. Social and Values Agenda: Adopts a conservative stance, advocating for religious education in schools and reducing certain social welfare expenditures. III. China-related Positioning China is not explicitly mentioned in the platform. There are neither anti-China rhetorical attacks nor concrete commitments to deepen strategic cooperation with China.

International News — December 3: Climate Action Network’s Open Session at COP28

1. First, she delivers an energizing pep talk: two years ago at COP, we weren’t even discussing 'loss and damage'—yet now we have an operational 'Loss and Damage Fund.' She also notes that fossil fuels have been thrust into the spotlight at this summit (implying, perhaps, that they’ll be fully phased out two years from now). 2. She expresses strong confidence that this COP will achieve meaningful progress toward phasing out fossil fuels. She recalls that last year, over 80 countries discussed a fossil-fuel phaseout agreement—and that same proposal has been passionately revived and debated at this summit. (She then enthusiastically lists the countries actively pushing this agenda—all developed nations or their allies with relatively clean energy structures.) Yet she privately acknowledges that reaching consensus requires money—and that Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Iran strongly oppose the agreement. 3. She criticizes decision-makers for continuing to pursue compromise by embedding genuine climate solutions—such as renewable energy, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and energy efficiency—within frameworks that still permit fossil fuel production, calling this 'greenwashing within greenwashing' (a rather provocative claim, indeed). Ms. Black again sharply criticizes the fossil-fuel industry’s CCS initiatives, followed by some vague, lofty rhetoric—ultimately unremarkable. A long-haired delegate from South America states: 1. Gustavo Petro’s election in Colombia’s 2022 presidential election, he says, helps decouple Latin America’s economic development from fossil fuel extraction (though it’s unclear how—does Colombia, traditionally a major fossil-fuel producer, really embrace green policies so wholeheartedly?). He further explains that this is precisely why Colombia endorsed the Non-Proliferation of Fossil Fuels Treaty—a treaty currently still in the proposal stage—at yesterday’s summit.
