Cocoa prices surged to 29,000 RMB per ton—setting a 45-year high. What happened?

Filming more footage of people trampling cocoa beans might actually help hedge against the sharp rise in cocoa prices. Such imagery is highly controversial and could temporarily dampen consumers’ appetite for chocolate. Yet it’s also possible that people won’t mind—and may even find it more ‘authentic’—in which case, there’s little recourse other than waiting for weather conditions to improve. We recommend filming more such scenes; they could serve as an effective price hedge. Joking aside, extreme weather has severely impacted numerous crops in recent years. Similar news reports have emerged worldwide: droughts causing yield shortfalls, excessive rainfall damaging harvests. As extreme weather intensifies, certain agricultural commodities inevitably face runaway price surges. Speculative trading in financial futures markets also contributes—making this a multifaceted issue. Currently, cocoa futures prices have soared to over $4,000 per ton—hitting a 45-year high. Financial speculators believe this production shortfall will persist at least until the end of 2024. Cocoa is the key raw material for chocolate, prompting global chocolate producers to plan price hikes. Chocolate prices have already risen by 14% over the past year. Major global chocolate manufacturers—including Lindt (Switzerland) and Hershey (USA)—have confirmed plans to raise chocolate prices. Côte d’Ivoire is the world’s largest cocoa producer, accounting for 40% of global output. This year, persistent heavy rainfall from April through early July devastated numerous cocoa plantations there.

Cocoa prices hit a record high; Nestlé, Hershey, Ferrero, and other brands have all announced price-increase plans.

Facing this severe situation, the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO) has called on governments, enterprises, and research institutions worldwide to strengthen cooperation and jointly address the risk of further contraction in the global cocoa market. Governments can enhance policy guidance to promote sustainable development of the cocoa industry; enterprises can increase R&D investment to boost cocoa crop yields and quality; and research institutions can advance technological innovation to provide technical support for stable industry growth. The report also urges consumers to stay informed about cocoa market developments and respond rationally to price fluctuations in chocolate and other cocoa-based products. As cocoa supply shrinks and production costs rise, prices for chocolate and related goods are likely to increase. Consumers should make prudent purchasing decisions based on their personal needs and financial capacity. An ICCO report reveals that the global cocoa market faces mounting risks of further contraction—a challenge demanding collaborative, innovative responses to ensure the industry’s stability and growth. At the same time, consumers must rationally interpret market price changes and make informed consumption choices. Multiple global chocolate companies have announced price hikes. Notably, numerous internationally renowned chocolate brands have declared price increases. Industry insiders point to imbalanced market supply and demand, alongside rising raw material and energy costs, as the primary drivers behind chocolate price hikes. Reports indicate that global cocoa prices have been climbing steadily since 2023—especially recently, when cocoa futures reached an all-time high. This surge has significantly increased chocolate production costs and exposed acute supply tensions in the global cocoa market. As the world’s two largest cocoa producers, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana face particularly pronounced output declines—directly undermining global cocoa market stability. Against this backdrop, many chocolate companies have had no choice but to adjust product pricing to offset mounting cost pressures. According to related reports, international giants including Nestlé, Hershey, and Ferrero have all announced price-increase plans. The extent of hikes varies by brand and product category—but consumers overall will face higher chocolate prices. Beyond rising raw material costs, surging energy prices and higher interest rates are also key factors driving chocolate price increases. Global energy market volatility continues to push up energy expenses throughout chocolate manufacturing. Meanwhile, elevated interest rates raise corporate financing costs—further squeezing profit margins. In response to the wave of price hikes, consumers have generally expressed understanding and acceptance. They view chocolate price adjustments as inevitable amid shifting global market conditions and escalating raw material costs. At the same time, consumers hope chocolate companies will deliver enhanced products and services to mitigate the impact of higher prices. For chocolate companies, raising prices may ease cost pressures—but maintaining competitiveness in the marketplace remains critical. Consequently, many firms are pursuing innovation and improvement to elevate product value and enrich consumer experience. For example, some are developing new cocoa varieties and advanced processing technologies to boost cocoa bean yields and quality; others are intensifying brand marketing and expanding distribution channels to attract more customers. The widespread price hikes across global chocolate companies represent an inevitable outcome of market supply-demand imbalances and rising costs.
