Feeding Tomorrow’s Entire Global Population: Modern Crop Protection Is Irreplaceable

However, by 2026, modern crop protection has long left behind the golden era of the 1990s—when discovering a single new active ingredient could guarantee two decades of market dominance. Public and regulatory demands for 'safer, more ecologically compatible' solutions have surged to unprecedented levels; R&D costs have escalated exponentially; and field-level pesticide resistance continues to intensify. What modern society must do is not abandon crop protection—but rather elevate, through cutting-edge science, every stage of the process: R&D, registration requirements, and ecological and safety risk assessments—to entirely new heights. This is precisely the core topic I will address today. I. Crop Protection Remains—and Will Continue to Be—a Massive Business, Today and Tomorrow In terms of market scale, crop protection remains an undisputed behemoth. According to the latest 2026 forecasts from leading research institutions—including Intel Market Research, Fact.MR, and Global Market Insights—the global agrochemical market is projected to reach approximately USD 82–110 billion in 2026, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2%–7.0% over the next decade. When adjacent sectors such as biopesticides and seed treatments are included, the overall crop protection ecosystem becomes even more substantial. Although specific figures vary slightly across different reporting methodologies, all data converge on the same conclusion: the industry continues to grow steadily. ・ According to general crop protection market reports, the global market size was approximately USD 54.47 billion in 2025, expected to rise to USD 55.99 billion in 2026, and further expand to USD 67.25 billion by 2032—representing a CAGR of roughly 3.1%. ・ Another report focused specifically on the agricultural pesticide industry estimates the global market size will reach USD 81.24 billion in 2026, reflecting a 5.7% year-on-year growth—with the Asia-Pacific region leading the way at 34.6% market share. From a product-structure perspective, herbicides still command the largest share (approximately 47.6%), followed closely by insecticides and fungicides. Meanwhile, the penetration rate of bio-based pesticides is projected to rise from 6.3% in 2020 to 14.7% in 2026—a direct and unmistakable signal of the industry’s green transformation. Yet beneath this market prosperity lies increasing industrial concentration. From around 20 companies with independent R&D capabilities in the 1980s, only about five remain today actively investing across the full spectrum of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and seed technologies. By 2026, this trend has sharpened further: Syngenta, Bayer, BASF, Corteva, Sumitomo Chemical, Nufarm, and FMC dominate global innovation in novel active ingredients, while China’s homegrown players—including Yangnong Chemical—are accelerating their pace of independent innovation. 💡 The underlying economic reality driving this consolidation is stark: developing a new pesticide active ingredient now costs over USD 300 million on average and takes 10–12 years. Regulatory requirements for toxicological, environmental fate, and ecological risk assessment dossiers have grown increasingly voluminous. Small, independent pesticide companies can scarcely shoulder the full cost—from discovery through registration—on their own. II. What Has Changed in Crop Protection Over Two Generations? Looking back from 2026, three major evolutionary trends stand out clearly. 1. From 'Broad-Spectrum Screening' to 'Precision Targeting' Two decades ago, discovery of new pesticides relied heavily on high-throughput screening: synthesizing vast libraries of compounds and testing each one individually for biological activity.

How is the pesticide industry doing? What is its current development status?

The industry is segmented into three categories: original-research patent-holding giants, generic-pesticide leaders, and domestic industry leaders. Pesticides comprise herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and biopesticides—and are highly synergistic with the seed industry. The top five original-research companies are Syngenta, Bayer, BASF, Corteva, and FMC; UPL and Adama are the leading generic-pesticide firms; and among domestic players, Yangnong Chemical, Runfeng Chemical, Lier Chemical, and Xin’an Chemical represent the core listed enterprises.
