PP plastic boasts broad application scope, being used to manufacture medical devices such as syringes, IV bags, and blood transfusion equipment; structural components including housings, handles, and handwheels; automotive interior parts—e.g., seats, armrests, headrests, door panels, instrument panels, steering wheels, and shock-absorbing pads—as well as exterior components. RPP plastic’s favorable electrical properties enable it to be used in numerous electrical components; its excellent corrosion resistance allows it to be applied in many chemical industry parts, such as pipes and valves for chemical equipment. Experts anticipate that polypropylene (PP) will enter a year of substantial capacity expansion, with integrated refining and petrochemical enterprises accelerating investment in new materials to mitigate risks associated with overcapacity. From 2017 to 2021, China’s propylene production capacity grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.3%. According to Baichuan Intelligence data, China is expected to add 11.45 million tons of propylene capacity in 2022–2023. Our calculations suggest that the CAGR of capacity from 2021 to 2023 may reach 11%, marking the industry’s entry into a phase of rapid capacity expansion. Consequently, the supply-demand balance for propylene will gradually loosen, and industry profits may shift downstream. Integrated private refineries are strategically developing downstream new-materials value chains based on propylene—such as ABS resins, polycarbonate, and lithium-ion battery separators—leveraging the flexibility of large-scale refinery facilities to fully exploit their self-supply advantage in raw materials, thereby enhancing value-added at the product level and effectively hedging against risks of product oversupply caused by excessively rapid industry capacity expansion. Regarding PP—the primary downstream application of propylene—the industry currently maintains a broadly balanced supply-demand relationship, with overall production and sales growing steadily. In 2021, PP output reached 26.78 million tons, up 6.50% year-on-year; apparent consumption stood at 30.59 million tons, down 2.18% year-on-year. From 2017 to 2021, average plant utilization was 87%. Against the backdrop of continuous capacity release and consistently high utilization rates, China’s PP import dependency has been declining in recent years, and the industry has essentially achieved self-sufficiency.
