Little-known insider truths about the dietary supplement industry!

Hello everyone! I’d like to share some behind-the-scenes insights I’ve gradually uncovered since deciding last year to enter the overseas nutritional supplement industry. Please note: These observations aren’t directed at any specific brand—they’re purely for light-hearted, informative discussion. Feel free to join in! 1. ‘Fake Foreign Brands’ Many overseas nutritional supplement brands familiar to Chinese consumers appear thoroughly authentic—complete with foreign-sounding names, English-language branding, international teams, celebrity endorsements, and claims of overseas manufacturing origins. In reality, however, many are operated entirely by Chinese teams. Some brands register an English name abroad and market themselves as prestigious heritage brands from a certain country—yet they’re actually newly launched ventures by Chinese teams. For example, the widely known brand ‘N-t-l-d’ (a phonetic transliteration). 2. Others acquire obscure, low-profile brands overseas at minimal cost—then tout them as having decades of storied history. Still others hire a few foreigners for endorsements or photo ops, publicly claiming to have their own R&D team or foreign founders—while the real owners and actual R&D personnel remain Chinese individuals operating from within China. 3. This practice may be understandable: When purchasing supplements, Chinese consumers often favor overseas brands, perceiving them as more professional and higher in quality. To boost market acceptance and brand premium, companies resort to this ‘fake foreign brand’ strategy—and evidence shows it works remarkably well. 4. ‘Swimming Goods’ Many supplements marketed as ‘Made in the USA,’ ‘Made in Europe,’ or ‘Made in Australia’ are, in fact, manufactured domestically in China. For instance, capsule-based supplements may have their raw materials processed into capsules inside China, then shipped en masse to overseas factories—where those factories merely repackage the capsules into bottles before shipping them back to bonded warehouses in China.

A deep dive into label claims on nutritional supplements

Recently, one of our commercial partners conducted laboratory testing on several nutritional supplements sold exclusively on Amazon. They specifically tested seven popular—and notably expensive—supplements. The results were shocking. Despite boasting thousands of 4.5- or 5-star reviews, many of these products failed to deliver the potency or efficacy claimed on their labels. See lab results for bromelain. See lab results for coenzyme Q10 and quercetin. See lab results for glutathione. See lab results for curcumin. See lab results for S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e). See lab results for phosphatidylserine. See lab results for alpha-lipoic acid. What lies behind these discrepancies? You may already know that regulation of nutritional supplements is relatively lax. Counterfeit or substandard supplement brands can be easily established and operated—enabling unscrupulous actors to exploit loopholes and even evade accountability. Add in thousands of fake reviews, and a best-selling product can be artificially manufactured overnight. You might ask: What if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the sales platform detects such misconduct? No problem—simply shut down the counterfeit brand and rapidly launch a new one. Consumers are virtually powerless against this cycle. Four practical tips for buying supplements wisely: 1. Choose reputable domestic brands. Established supplement brands often maintain dedicated quality control departments—or rely on third-party laboratories for rigorous quality oversight. The U.S. FDA also conducts regular inspections of such companies. For example, Now Foods’ quality control department employs over 150 full-time staff, most holding bachelor’s degrees or higher—including several with doctoral degrees. iHerb selectively partners only with brands meeting such stringent quality standards.
