What exactly is iron ore in Australia?

The 'gold rush' not only brought wealth but also population—bringing in a large number of adventurous and experienced prospectors and miners, laying a solid foundation for the upcoming second mining boom. —————————— Australia’s second mining boom—lasting 10–15 years—was fueled by the late 19th-century global shift into the Second Industrial Revolution, centered on electricity, steel, heavy chemicals, and railways. This created unprecedented demand for base metals (e.g., copper, lead, zinc, silver). At the same time, Britain—the dominant global power at the time—had abundant capital actively seeking new sources of wealth. With ample capital, a large pool of prospectors and miners, and surging global demand for base metals driven by the Second Industrial Revolution, conditions were ripe—and crucially, 'the country actually had mines'... 'The Silver City'—Broken Hill, New South Wales: silver, lead, and zinc deposits. 'The Copper King'—Mount Lyell, Tasmania: copper deposits. 'The Return of Gold'—Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The direct outcome of this second mining boom was the founding of BHP (now a national mining leader), marking a transition from individualistic gold prospectors to capital-intensive large corporations. This pivotal shift helped transform Australia from a 'gold-rush camp' into a 'modern industrialized nation.' In 1915, BHP opened a steelworks in Newcastle, rapidly integrating downstream. 'Barren land' began industrializing... ——————————— Australia’s third mining boom stemmed from Japan’s post-WWII reconstruction and rapid economic growth, lasting roughly another 10–15 years (circa 1960–1975). The focus shifted from precious and base metals to bulk industrial raw materials—iron ore and coking coal. This boom centered on the Pilbara region in Western Australia, home to world-class, massive hematite deposits—astonishing in both scale and grade. By this point, Australia had already gained considerable expertise through its first two mining booms. Now, it was further boosted by substantial Japanese capital and robust Japanese demand—propelling Australia’s mining industry to yet another level. Across vast deserts, mining companies built entirely new towns, deep-water ports (e.g., Dampier Port, Port Hedland), and hundreds of kilometers of heavy-haul railways linking inland mines to the coast. This highly efficient integrated supply chain—'mine–rail–port'—remains the core competitive advantage of Australia’s iron ore industry to this day. Concurrently developed alongside Western Australia’s iron ore was coking coal from Queensland’s Bowen Basin. Large volumes of iron ore and coking coal were shipped to Japan. Because Japan not only purchased iron ore and coking coal but also invested directly in mines and infrastructure, settlements were made via long-term contracts with fixed pricing. This model—investment in mines and infrastructure plus long-term contract pricing—later became standard practice, emulated by Chinese buyers. Japan’s role as an early mover also granted it significant leverage in subsequent Sino-Australian mining negotiations—enabling it to secure advantageous terms and extract considerable benefits...

Crazy stone: Iron ore hits a two-year high

Iron ore has been the star of futures markets lately—rising from 800 to 900 over eight trading days, hitting a two-year high. Back in May 2021, iron ore prices spiked to 1,200—a surge that significantly inflated manufacturing costs in China, prompting decisive government intervention: centralized global procurement of iron ore, akin to China’s medical insurance bulk purchasing system. Within six months, the price plummeted from 1,200 to 500. Since then, iron ore prices have mostly oscillated around 600–700. Starting this past May, however, prices have risen steadily for six months—from 600 to today’s 900. The primary driver behind this rally is resurging demand: China’s manufacturing PMI rebounded above 50 in September. Though it dipped slightly to 49.5 in October, this figure remains strong considering the eight-day Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday at the start of the month. While the global economy remains sluggish overall, China is currently in a recovery phase. Especially notable are recent major policy initiatives: trillion-yuan infrastructure sovereign bonds; affordable housing projects modeled on Singapore’s public housing system, planned for 35 cities with populations exceeding three million. Construction activity is poised to intensify dramatically in the near future.
